Baz and FL folks, how are you faring?

I've got a HS buddy in Port Orange that posted on facebook that his charger is probably totaled and he's got water in his first floor. I don't think that's too far from New Smyrna Beach. Hopefully, Baz's mom is OK. I think the minor effects are often harder on the older folks.

My mom and grandmother are OK, farther south. My aunt that's a few miles from them has been without power since last night.

I see that the storm is currently over Cape Canaveral, so I think that means astrochex and Baz are getting it pretty rough.

I guess the original prediction that it would run up the Gulf coast didn't work out and it crossed right over the peninsula.

Power blinked a few times but total non event for me in NW Alachua County (N Central, where Gainesville is, 90mi S. of Ga. and about 70 miles from either coast). Weather here and on radar to west is good enough I'm considering going fishing in a couple of hours over in Cedar Key area...

Based on what I saw things went north of Baz (SE Fl) for most part.... but I also know we have a few that took a direct hit in SW Florida...

And it looks like Byron and crew in Jax/St Aug are getting the crap beat out of 'em... For those over there that are kinda close-ish to me I have a generator someone can borrow for a few weeks if needed. Shoot me a PM if I can help.

You have been very lucky to be on the "clean" side of the storm. I think many/most of the original models had you getting the worst of it. Blinking power is really minor compared to many of the alternatives.

I’m just north of Palm Bay. For us, the storm has been entirely without drama. We are very thankful.

Excellent! That's great news. My family in Vero a little farther south had a similar experience.

Down in Stuart we had a lot of rain on Tuesday night, but very little wind. Yesterday, while the SW Coast was being hammered, we had no rain and only a nice breeze. After the hurricane made landfall and and moved a bit closer to our area, our winds picked up to about 40 to 60 mph through the night. No big deal. some palm fronds down and some debris scattered about. Some areas lost power, but we only had a few momentary blinks of the lights.

I am thinking I may want to invest in a Generac whole house generator though. A friend with a rather large house has a 22,000 watt unit and it came in handy as her neighborhood lost power. That unit powers everything in her house including two AC units.

Good to hear that you got off pretty easy. I think they got about 6" of rain and some wind and gusts in Vero Beach.

In the grand scheme of things, losing power is relatively minor, inconvenient, mostly about comfort and possibly losing some food if the power is out long enough.

But if you can afford it, having a generator so you don't have to deal with that particular inconvenience is huge especially as we get older and can, but don't want to deal with that kind of thing.

Many years ago, we were without power for 5 days. Our neighbor ended up with a small, spare generator that he loaned us for the last 3-ish of those. It didn't power our AC, but it kept the fridge going, allowed us to run some lamps and fans, and kept our phones and laptops charged. It was nice to have, but being able to run AC would have been huge. It was so muggy that our downstairs tile floor "sweat" all day, and sleeping was miserable between the heat, humidity, and sound of generators all over the neighborhood.

We were just talking to a neighbor who mentioned that homes further down our peninsula lost power for two weeks when the last hurricane came through here a few years back. Luckily our neighborhood was down for only a day.

Two weeks without AC would be unpleasant...

So far all is well here.

The perfect sentiment.

We have been through a number of CAT 1 and 2's here...I cannot imagine the press of a CAT 4.

Check in when you can Baz, Byron and others.

Byron is 2 posts up, he's good. I'm still waiting to hear from Baz, hopefully, he and his mom are safe and sound. It's good to hear from so many folks that they are OK. Not everyone is having an easy time of it.

Hopefully Baz is catching some great waves right now! My college surfing buds would make a dash to Nags Head after every storm....back when it was practically deserted year round.

This storm could still be a big deal here... particularly in the mtns....

I use to do the same thing, I went to check on a friend's house, he was evacuated, and he is 92. So far, his place is safe

Local watering hole is open

ST Augustine, near Hughes place.

He's prob checking in on his Mom...not sure where she lives, but not too far from him.

Passing a message along for all Pelicans affected by Ian....from a guy in NW Ohio thinking of them all praying for their safety.

The same from me.

My side of Jax faired well. It's pretty much gone now. Mostly wind. Very little rain.
