I waited later to retire that I probably needed to (as I wanted to ensure I did not run out of money) ...but it also leaves me with a bit less time/years (while fully capable) to get everything done I want to do. While I seem to have plenty of money in retirement (which is very helpful or I would be frantic and looking for a job), I still do all the things noted above (plus a lot more because I have the time). I have done a lot more physical labor than I did for decades as I can work on something every day, all day for weeks at a time. Projects that I could have never done when younger and more physically capable because I simply have more uninterrupted time (other than I need to stop to rest more often now). I cut trees and cleared brush for a month in the spring and have another month's worth to do this fall/spring. I have fixed a lot of things (from getting the lights back on with my doorbell buttons to HVAC and septic system) and have done deferred maintenance on my cars and homes that has waited for years. I worked every day for weeks on some 911 restoration projects that had stalled years ago (and the car just sat there disassembled) and am almost finished now. I have been mowing more often and doing a better job on my large property as well as my vacation homes (which I am updating in phases when I travel to them). I have driven cross country North to South or East to West and back 5 or 6 times this year and travelled to visit grandchildren and my wife father (only one of our parents still alive) many, many times. I have also flown a couple of times.
I think that keeping really busy and doing a significant amount of physical labor keeps you young/younger (just as exercising one's brain posting here ...or better, debating in PARF). I am also spending time managing investments. I do not have a set schedule other than eating which my wife seems to schedule her world around...but it seems like there is so much I want to do (and not going to pay anyone to do anything that I would not have paid before) that I need to try to get tasks done around meals. It was really bad (urgency to finish projects) at first that I world often work on them all night (or very late) in the garage or basement, etc. I am beginning to hit a stride now. I have also been scanning in old photos (my mom passed and there are boxes) ...and sending some to relatives via email (of their family members). I have not done mine so will eventually do those too. I have actually lost almost 15 lbs and 4 belt notches/holes (pants are falling down) after retiring at the end of last year without dieting as I freed myself from my chair/desk...and one does not munch on snacks with dirty hands or while busting ass under a car or out at the far side of the property whacking weeds or cutting trees (and my muscle tone is much better). Much of the time, I am waiting on some sort of part or tool to be delivered and simply work the project with the part that came that day. Just fixed my daughter's old car yesterday that she left in my garage at my vacation home...because I was checking the battery and saw some issues (that her husband apparently either missed, created, or simply did not have time to do. They will likely never notice or appreciate it (busy working and raising kids and have other cars) ...but I had the time and a couple hundred for the needed parts. I recently helped them move (but hurt my back lowing me down for about three weeks). Of course, I did not let on to them as they would feel bad and not ask/allow me to help again. I have several pieces of antique furniture that I plan to refinish as well (when the other things get done). Also spending more quality time with my wife. I probably neglected her some the last few years due to my hectic work schedule. A long lunch at a favorite restaurant is a great time that we really never had time for before. The old cliche of "stop and smell the roses" a bit? |
