Anybody look at aluminum open car trailers lately?

Anybody look at aluminum open car trailers lately? New ones are outrageous. They’ve always held their price well, but I’ve been looking for a week and haven’t found any semi-good deals. In fact aluminum open trailers are hard to find.

I actually found one near my house, but by the time I called it was gone.

It’s making me wonder, if I can build a steel trailer in the garage?

Actually been prowling for over a month for an aluminum enclosed. Trailex, Jimglo or ATC. No luck yet.

I have not seen one for sale recently. I invested in a nice Trailex open aluminum trailer and thought I would use it daily. It works very well...but I only used it a couple of times and have not used it in almost 10 years as I don't race and drive my cars where they need to go. Maybe renting a Uhaul suits most people's needs better.

Of course, they seem to hold their value well...so no reason to sell once you buy one...unless you don't have a place to store it. You can always get your money back later (and you just might need it).

All trailer prices have shot way up. I sold my enclosed for more than I paid 10 years ago.

My dump and equipment trailers would bring more than I paid new, but I still use them.

They are expensive and weigh about 50% of a common steel car hauler. I guess it depends on how badly you want to drop 1000# of tare weight. My brother has a nice older steel car hauler he got for around $2k used. I have been looking for a lightweight aluminum featherweight, trailer or other but if they come up for sale, the seller wants $8k plus. Just too precious for my blood but if one came along for $4k I would probably buy it.

Only reason I can see for one is an inadequate tow vehicle. Beyond that steel is a better choice regardless of cost.

As mentioned, I see steel trailers going for $5000. Nothing fancy either.

That’s what made me think about building my own. Of course materials have gone up and I can end up with more money in a home built trailer then a store-bought trailer?

I just made an offer on a Featherlite open deck, best trailer for towing 911s. Asking is $2500 above a few years ago.

My dear Friend had been looking for an Alumalite trailer for a long time. Took me 10 minutes to find him one on Craigslist once he told me he was looking. All we had to do was take a leisurely trip up the Natchez Trace and back to get it home. Subaru outback handled it like it wasn't there. 2015.

I was at a PCA swap meet yesterday . One of the items for sale was a steel car trailer for $2900 . I already have one so didn't look it over closely but it had steel rails for the wheels and a wood planked center . Also had an electric winch and battery .

Why is a featherlight the best trailer for towing 911s versus a Trailex (long the standard)?

Personally, I would like to have a featherweight too vs my Trailex because it would be easier to use for my large zero-turn as well...but don't see the advantages for either of my G-bodies.

Aluminum is a little lighter and with the Featherlight more aluminum is used so it is a stronger trailer than a steel trailer.
Aluminum trailer does not rust like an old steel trailer.
Steel trailer construction with a wood floor soaks up oil, aluminum floors cleans up with simple green.
This tilt trailer (no ramps) was $15k new. ouch

I have an old Carson steel and newer Featherlight Aluminum.

Raw material (steel and aluminum) have doubled in price since 2020. I think we're just starting to see the implications of this.

I think we found who’s been hoarding them! 😂
