Clock Maker's Porn (and the Antikythera Mechanism)

Short backstory - a lump of bronze was found in a shipwreck 116 years ago, near the Greek island Antikythera. Once properly analysed in the later 20th century, it completely changed historians' understanding of how far mathematically and mechanically advanced the ancient Greeks were. However, in 2006 the artifacts were subjected to CT scanning, and vast amount they learned about the device basically blew their minds.

This thing has been around a while - perhaps you've already heard of it. But an Aussie has decided to document his reproduction build, and his work is at once fascinating, elegant and utterly captivating.

So far he looks to be 80% done. Episode 1 is below, and there are 6 more at varying lengths. His YouTube channel, Clickspring, also documents him making various tools for the build, along with other projects. It's simply mind blowing.

What's interesting about the guy is how he's able to get such a fine finish on his parts, even those that he makes by hand with a file and other tools.

Well - Chris of Clickspring has been busy - and now has a published paper providing evidence that the 365 day calendar "assumption" of the Antikythera device has been wrong.

It is an amazing device. Really cool that modern technology has allowed us to re-create it, and get a better understanding of what the ancients knew. One speculation was that the device was made for Archimedes himself, but the boat sinking kept it from him. It would have to have been made for someone wealthy enough, and educated enough to use it.

Many people believe that the anchient humans were just not as smart as we are, and that is simply not true. Homo Sapiens intelligence is basically the same for the last 250,000 years.

I've long thought that was an odd view to have for a scientist, and I agree. On top of that, you've got to remember that intelligence distribution is on a curve (bell curve, I assume) such that most folks are "average" and then there's a few that are far above.

Thanks for posting. I think I watched all or most of his original clock build videos. I started watching the antikythera build too, but then stopped. I've been fascinated by the antikythera since I first heard about it.

Clockspring posted another update the other day - this is Episode 11. He engraves the plate - and of course as normal - he makes the tool used to do the engraving!

When I was explaining the tidal cycles and their repeating amplitides, the number was just under 19 years. The Phonecians and Greeks were seafaring people. They understood this.
