Son in law is now paramedic certified
Two or three years ago, our son-in-law decided that he didn't like his job or where it was going. He wanted to do something "more." So he quit and went to school to be a firefighter. He graduated top of his class and went to work in a firestation. The station that he worked for has paid for him to do EMT basic and EMT advanced (I think that's what they are called).
Because he was the new guy, he was pretty much 100% relegated to EMT duties (I think everyone prefers fire duty so the new guy got the work that no one else wanted). His station said "we'll pay and allow your work to revolve around the paramedic class." So he went through paramedic school earlier this year. He didn't really want to, but it was too good a deal (good for his career) to pass up. He finished his training/intern (ride alongs) work a month or so ago. He took his test yesterday and found out this morning that he passed!

One of our family friends son dis the same thing. He wanted to be a fireman, but ended up as an EMT. He found he really enjoyed it. He is a fireman, but mostly works from an ambulance.
He has been doing it for many years now.

I think he'd really prefer to be doing the firefighting, but this adds to his resume so he felt like he would be foolish not to take advantage of the offer.
He didn't feel very good about the test yesterday. He said that he got about 150 questions answered. He said that there were some odd questions that he didn't even remember coming up in training. I figured it was just nerves, and was pleased to hear this morning that was the case.

is the rig he's assigned to stationed at a fire house? if so he will still be part of a shift instead of sitting in a parking lot in a private ambulance waiting on calls. fire dept EMT assignments are way better than the other ones I reference.

No idea. I'm not sure of the details of how he works.

I think he was way out in the 'burbs, so while I'm sure he's seen some stuff, it was probably nothing like he'd have seen in Houston proper.

Such a great call on his part.
He will matter to real people, in real time, during what could be the most traumatic time in their lives. I admire Firemen, EMTs and others because, as I have written here before, I don’t have the stones to do what they do. He has my best.

He will see some bad stuff in that line of work, good on him for stepping up.

Harris Co, TX, Cook Co, IL or LA County, you will get plenty of GSW training. Ben Taub is a helluva place.

He was much farther along in life before deciding to go into this line. Because of that, he's never going to work anywhere that's civil service/municipal, because they have a cut off for some reason. So he's probably unlikely to ever work in Houston/Harris. And the Houston FD has their own school that he'd have had to go to. He went to one on the SE side of town.

Respect! I have a friend that is a paramedic. Back in the day I felt most assured when we rode our beemers together.

Bravo! Let him know to stay strong as a first responder. The path is not easy and requires a strong mental fortitude, especially in todays charged environment. He has some fun and trying times ahead of him. Personal PPE is paramount in every scene and there are no shortcuts. As he rolls into a charged and emotional scene, be mindful of the big picture and don’t fall into getting “tunnel vision”. I hate to say it, but there are some bad folks out there and he just needs to be aware of his surroundings. He now has a “new family” that is unlike no other.
All he has to do, is make the difference in one person’s life to make his choice worth every moment of his education. Stay strong and motor on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Extraordinary pay per hour of actual work but the first fatality would have me running back to some miserable cubie farm. I suspect you can never ‘unsee’ many things in that job. Props to him.
