Reg vs Prem
 

For many years, the gas stations here have maintained a 60 cent spread from reg to prem gas.
Now, the spread is 80 to 90 cents per gal.
Some bean counter must have seen that they were leaving money on the table.

Reg here is $4.32 and Prem is $5.12

What does the civic do best on Steve?

There are two stickers that say "Prem fuel recommended"....not 'required' as in what my Prelude says.
Just to be safe...I've only used Premium in it.

You have to be careful buying premium here as well.
There is a different up price at different gas stations.
They usually only advertise the regular fuel price and people assume.

Around here the spread from regular to premium is not nearly as much as buying gasohol. The federal subsidies for the corn farmers must be enormous. I stick to 100% real gas for the El Camino, and Premium only for the Porsches.

Steve your car being very modern, I'm sure it would have a knock sensor and tunes itself to whatever gas is in it. You never know, it may go faster with the higher octane stuff.

It's a 1998...would that still apply?

For years the delta was .20 between them around here.... not sure now.

Regular was 3.47 for 87 at my goto this morning .... I purchased No-E 90 for 4.20 at a different station yesterday.

And then there is CA :(....

Are you measuring the difference between E-10 regular and E-0 premium, or E-15 regular to E-0 premium, or is your premium E-10 as well?

But I get what you're saying. We have E-10 regular, and most stations are 91 octane E-0, and the price difference used to be 70 cents / gallon, when prices went up to $4.00 for regular, premium went to $4.90, and then when they came down, the difference stayed at 90 cents / gallon. The thing is, around here stations with E-10 premium (there's very few, thanks Kwik Trip) charge the same for their E-10 premium as Kwik Trip charges for E-0 premium.

We now have a couple of stations with E-0 87 octane regular, but I don't know what they're charging for it. It means I won't have to run premium in the mower and snowblower, I'll maybe save a couple bucks over a year.

Most stations here have reg 87 oct....mid-grade...and prem 91 oct.

The difference between the reg and prem was always .60
Now it's .80 and someplaces .90

It's like someone suddenly realized the higher cost of gas should allow a bigger spread.

Used to be $50 over spot, then $100, now $200+...

Is it comparable on a percentage basis?

I grew up with a 10-cent spread between each grade. The current range does seem a moneymaker to some degree.

'Premium fuel recommended' means it will run fine on regular, but was tuned for premium and will make insignificantly less power on regular.
