G'day!
|
I have never used a DVR but I guess that's what is being used nowadays.
I've recorded plenty back in the day with a DVD and VHS recorder. I have cable and also stream but not wireless yet but I will at some point. What are you guys using? TIA!

Has anyone ever done the calculation of whether it was more economical to purchase your own recorder vs. using that of your provider's?
That is assuming you are paying extra for that function and it would be optional to opt out and use your own.

You don't.
It's called streaming on demand. Welcome to 2015

I don't think it's that simple - or everyone would be doing it.
Streaming isn't free - and even if you have an existing subscription with Netflix or Amazon Prime - or already pay for cable TV - you are still going to pay extra to stream a lot of stuff.

I have a old Magnavox DVR. It's SD, not HD, but I don't care. It has a digital tuner, so it can record anything over the air.
And yes, it's better than streaming, because there are some things that are broadcast and not available on streaming, and I can fast forward through the commercials, can't do that when you're watching a stream. The only thing I dislike is the clock runs fast and won't sync to the signal sent by most broadcast stations. So I usually set the recordings to run long, and reset the clock every couple of months. |

I've got a Panasonic TV recorder.
I can pause live TV while I get another drink, or do a rewind and freeze frame if the netball girls are on. We have a thing called Feewiew here in NZ which is a (on the TV) TV guide and I can pick and choose what to record, or record a series. It can record two chanels while I watch a third. |

Streaming is that simple, and it is always cheaper than its nasty cable counterparts. Between YouTubeTV and Philo we get every channel we had through DirecTV, at well over $100 less per month, and no longer have to worry about outages or blackouts, and the recording function is built in, which eliminates all the extraneous equipment. I'd never go back to any type of cable.

I use a software application called "4K Video Downloader" which allows saving YouTube movies or videos and I also have a Hauppauge Uverse to Digital converter to capture any TV show onto my PC.
Once I get the MP4 files saved into a subdirectory I use software names "AVS Video Editor" to assemble 20 to 30 You Tube files into one 2 hour MP4 movie that I can watch later on my RoKu device. All these have free trials then $30 or so for a license. John |

We have Sony Bravias in two rooms, and Samsungs in others, and they are all smart TVs that stream via downloaded apps. We don't have to utilize any additional equipment to stream on any of them, and the "library" function works great on all of our services. We can pause a show in one room, and pick it up where we left off in another if we want to--it's been so much better than DirecTV.
