I have an odd type of Crohn’s in that when it flares up it ears a hole through the small bowel. Fortunately, it’s only done it once, but once is enough. The reason why I’m telling you this is I didn’t even know I had Crohn’s until I started getting sharp pains in my abdomen and they discovered the hole and the abscess. Keep in mind, I was getting sharp pains for several weeks before I went in to get things checked out. The remedy, while painful, was effective. They used a large syringe to go down to the abscess and drain it. Then they put me on an IV antibiotic. A few days later, after the infection was gone, they did have to do laparoscopic surgery to do a bowel resection. Again, while all of this was painful, it was not difficult. All of this took place back in 2008 and I have not had a reoccurrence as long as I take my medication. To relate this back to your sister, they caught the problem immediately and are taking active steps. I waited weeks before I went in and I still survived! So keep in mind several things. First, they’re going to have to make sure there is no infection or abscess. Next, they’re going to have to do something about the hole in the intestine. I imagine a resection will be what they decide to do. Finally, she will survive all of this!
