Don't open pool next year...what do I do?

Did a search....found nothing. I opened and closed my pool this year. Had it serviced regularly. Cost thousands for nobody to go in it! I am old and don't go in anymore. Next year, if i don't open it, I won't have to close it. It has a mesh cover. Anybody know what chemicals I have to put in next summer so it doesn't get too bad? I am planning on a separate pump to sort of circulate the water. Any advise is appreciated.

Why does it cost thousands? I spent $279 on a bucket of chlorine tabs, which will last a year, not just a summer. I spent maybe $50 on other various chemicals. I DIY just about everything and enjoy it. Had I not switched from a DE to a cartridge filter and gotten a new Pool Cleaner, my costs would have been under $400. Even with the upgrades, which will last at least 10 yrs, I spent under $1500.

Why does it cost thousands?
Why does it cost thousands? Opening, closing, chemicals, servicing etc. I used to take care of it myself. Comes a time when your physical capacity disallows that. As a younger person I could not understand what old people were going through. Now I can.

Around. here you have to keep water in it so it does not rise up out of the ground. Otherwise, sure, just empty it.

Yes on deck! And get yourself a hot tub to put next to it. If you're old like me you'll use it a lot more than the pool

I'd worry about what the summer heat will do to everything without water in it. Liner will sag without the pull being filled and seals will dry up.
I never found it much trouble and budgeted $1,000 a year which included a new cover etc. every 5 years.

If you're never going to use it again drain it, put a sump pump in it, and build a deck over it.

Might be a violation of local codes.

When they drained my pool in Houston to refinish it they drilled several substantial (3" or so) holes through the gunite into the ground. I'm pretty sure this was to reduce the risk of it popping up.

I'm known as Poolboy on another site. I'd love to help.

But I only give share trader advice. The Poolboy character is an 8 year old boy who hires the other kids in his class to clean the pools and pays them $25 for a days work and charges the pool owner between $800 and $1200 for the job.

I say things like "I'm only 8 but as smart as a 10 year old." Haha, it really winds the old guys up on the share trader forum getting advice from an (apparent) 8 year old, and telling them where they have gone wrong and how much money I am making.

But as far as your pool goes, sorry Poolboy can't help.

I seriously suggest you create an account and post this question on the Trouble Free Pools website.

Koi or turtles will save big dollars on chlorine. Neither one likes it.

Drain it and let the local skateboarders have at it.
