I learned that people look at you a lot less funny if you say you are buying tires for your son-in-law that if you say you want to buy life insurance.

Donner Summit camera lens is sort of half covered with snow, coming down pretty hard.

What did he say about the tires, or did I miss that in the thread above?

Not much. Mom spilled the beans. I wanted to wait until he noticed.

It feels good to help.
My son and his wife have a 2006 Matrix as a 2nd car that doesn't get much use.
Leaking power steering fluid I tell him to bring it to me which is an hour away.
I look at it and estimate it will be a grand and I will take it somewhere. He says do it and he will pay. Leaves the car with me.
I spend 2 grand and about 30 hours of my time. There was lots of other things.
He comes to pick it up and I say "it's on me" with the condition you get new tires as they are old and cracked. He agrees.
I set him up with a tire place close to his house. Chose the brand. All he to do is make an appointment.
He sends me pics of old snow tires that were under the deck in the dirt and asks if they are okay.
I said f##k no!
Still no tires. Grrr (They have money)

A couple of years ago a good friend's son was moving from Vancouver Island to his new job in Edmonton. Knowing what the mountain passes were like in January, our friend asked her son about the tires on his truck. He said, "No problem " as it was a 4x4. He started out and made it as far as Merit before he realized all seasons were likely to get him killed. I wonder how many times that happens.

Best

Honest to goodness snow tires are like magic.

I would have done the same. If the kid ends up dead or seriously injured, you'd be very upset with yourself, because you had a hunch.

I would be very surprised if the young man didn't learn a lesson from it. Ideally he will feel loved but also a little ashamed and he may sense that maybe tires are more important than he thought. Next time he will likely pay more attention and buy a set himself.

To anyone who thinks this is overly generous, it is Tobra's sonIL. Likely will be the father of his grandkids. And he needs the vehicle to drive to school, not for a discretionary drive.

Update:

So maybe 3-4 weeks after getting the tires with the snowflake inside the mountain embossed on the side, we get a call from my daughter on a Tuesday night about 20:00, wants us to come over and watch the kids. ??? Jason hit a deer, he is okay, but I want to go pick him up at the hospital.

Less than a thousand miles, truck totalled. Daughter insisted she wanted the tires back, as they were brand new. They gave her a $1500 credit instead, which is not bad because the tires were under a grand out the door. He was saying he could get chains for the Civic and drive that, to which she responded, "Hell no. I am not raising these kids by myself. You would be dead if you hit a deer in that car." Her foot definitely came down on this deal. Gave him $18,000 for a 17 year old Toyota Tacoma, now they have to find another car. I told them to just buy something new. My son runs a Toyota dealership, so they have the hook up on that.

Yeah, already the father of the grandkids. Those two make the prettiest babies you ever saw in your life.

Every time I visited my kids on campus, I made sure to do a shade tree check on their cars. Whatever needed fixing got fixed...when I wrote the check.

I'm glad my son has become as successful as he has. I couldn't afford to help take care of his cars now, I don't run in that demographic. I have my screen saver set to scroll thru pics I've taken and every time his twin boys come on it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

Went up to visit our son who just moved to Fairbanks AK last October. I asked him when he picked us up at the airport if he had winterized the Subaru Outback we sold him. He said no very nonchalantly as he can do from time to time. That’s all good in a climate like NorCal or their previous residence of Texas. Fairbanks not so much. I took his car the next day out to scout some fishing spots. It came home with a brand new set of Blizzaks and an appointment to get a block heater. Sometimes you take matters into your own hands. I won’t have my grandson getting stuck in the snow.

Sometimes you just have to keep them from learning the hard way about things like tires, or getting stuck in the snow.

Cute little guy you've got there.

Is he going to plug in the block heater and is he going to swap the tires back to all-season or summer tires when it warms up?

Great looking grandson!

Great looking grandson!

He promised me he would. He’s in Alaska, I’m in California. I can only hope.

My Cayenne does very well on snow and ice with just M+S tires. I drove a pretty steep back-road with deep snow and pure ice on a steep hairpin, with no slipping. Going downhill, it stopped easily on the ice. I don't see a need for Mt/snowflake tires. But then, it's a Porsche. I have chains just in case, but I don't know if I'll ever need them.
