How do you deal with liars?

Buy a car from them ... vote for them ... ignore them ... or just tell them they are FOS to their face?

Discuss....

Depends on the circumstances.

Once you know they are dishonest, deal with them accordingly. Don’t believe everything they say, that’s for sure. Fact check as needed.

I’ve called out sales people for lying in the past and asked why I should trust them after I’ve caught them being dishonest.

Don't lie to people who trust you.
Don't trust people who lie to you.

I had a manager that would lie as soon as he had a little bit of pressure put on him.
He is gone now.

I deal with liars by not dealing with them.

I go " oh yeah, that is interesting " outloud, while internally , I am writing them off , and generally discounting everything they say .

It depends upon the relationship. Is it someone that I HAVE to deal with (someone at work or in some position where I can't avoid them)? Is it someone that's an acquaintance where I can break ties? Is it someone that I'm guaranteed to run into from time to time that really wants to interact with me?

Someone that I have to deal with. Stay civil, act like everything is good, assume everything out of their mouth is a lie and act accordingly. I've had coworkers that were crap. You're stuck with them. You also may not want to piss them off since they may have friends/relationships that they could use to cause trouble for you.

If it's not someone that I have to deal with, I'll just break ties with them. No need to keep them around.

If it's someone that I'm guaranteed to have to deal with from time to time, I'll probably treat them like the first group, but if they just piss me off too much, then I'm likely to be a dick to try to get them to stop wanting to interact with me much. It's pretty rare, but I've done it a few times over the years, it usually works, but not always. Once or twice it's backfired and somehow endeared me to the person that I'm being a jerk to which makes them want to interact more. That's a nightmare. But usually that improves the situation somehow. I guess they now view me as some sort of friend and their behavior changes.

there are very few true liars in the world. most lies you encounter every day are actually disagreements of opinions that are never actually sorted out. ie, its easier to just be like, "this person is liar" instead of "this person and i have core values that disagree, so when this person says such and such 'works' he probably thinks it does, i know it doesn't, because we define 'works' very differently"

but then there are true liars, the grifters. and the problem here is that lies build. its starts with something small, and pretty soon, at least even by my age, there entire life is a lie. it started with a few grades in high school, and ballooned into an entire fictional career, fitting with fictional wife, fictional nice cars, etc ...

and even these lies are not straight up fictions. ie, he is married. hes just married to a woman who hates him. and he has the nice and house and cars, its just that he is broke with debt.

lies build. thats the best motivation in the world to not lie.

There are many types of lies;

The outright lie “I was a Navy Seal who drove an Abrams M1 tank for 30 hours straight in Desert Storm.”

The polite lie “No those pants don’t make you look fat.”

The lie of “specifics”, “You said I couldn’t watch TV but you said nothing about streaming services.”

The lie of misrepresentation, “Coming across like an expert (or knowledgeable about something) when in fact you are not. This NEVER happens on Pelican

The list goes on and on. . .

Good question. As stated above, many types of lies and that includes cheating. Or not following through on a promise.

I have always said once chance or you're done. A lot of the time it's actually the second offense and they are really done then. Totally written out of my life. Yes, that is a face to face thing if that is appropriate. If it is more of a natural thing I let it roll.

But I've rolled on hundreds. Don't have time.

I'll start a new thread about annoying people. Same thing for me.

I fired a woman who lied to me about why she was late for work for the third (or fourth - I don't remember for sure) time in a month. I said something about it here and caught a ration of $iht from the kind folks at PPOT.
You work for me and you lie to me - you're FIRED and I don't care what anybody thinks of it.

I'll spin this question : When did lying become acceptable?

The response so far indicate that those posting find it unacceptable. But....

You have the POTUS... On national TV saying he didn't have sexual relationship with Monica... is that when it started? Lets not get political, but it appears that we get nonstop lies from our politicians .

Religious leaders - saying one thing but doing something else behind closed doors.

Fakebook postings from people pretending to have wonderful lives - but you know they are miserable or faking their cool factor.

Is it that no one gets called out? No penalty for the lie? Birds of a feather sticking together?

No kickback from me. Lie about being late? Own up!

And then you may still get fired, but not for being a liar.

Liars are scary people.

The good ones are such good liars that they actually believe it themselves.

He would lie even if you said yes! lol
