Gentlemen, Change Your Clocks
 

Remember, tonight/Sunday morning here in the USA, you HAVE to stay up until 2:00 AM to set every clock in your house and garage back to 1:00 AM to celebrate the end of Daylight Savings Time for 2022. So drag out all those manuals for your car, the microwave, DVR, VCR (if you still have one), answering machine, digital desktop clock/thermometer and TV because you will probably need them. Your "smart" phone and computer usually take care of themselves.

Admittedly, I’m not really paying attention but I thought that Congress eliminated daylight savings time last year(??)

The cars are the worst. The owners manuals are dog-eared to the clock settings.

This one doesn't have automatic dst setting.

I think we still have to "Spring Ahead" one more time and then never change from then on. If that is true, then next Fall in 2023, we will do nothing.

Groan...imposed so we who don't fly can also experience jet lag.

No such law has been passed.

This change is easy. It's the spring forward change that sucks.



I'm looking forward to the next spring forward, hopefully, being the last. (It's not a done deal yet). The Senate passed it, but Congress has not.

I guess the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021 but the House is still setting on it.

I have nowhere to be that requires me to be on anything other than Flatbutt time.

I'm pretty sure that you'd be just as likely as me and my missus to still have a pup that didn't care that the time changed. I saw a passing on Facebook the other day for puppies, but we are not ready.

I set all my clocks to EFT (Eastern Flatbutt Time)....

I knew the computers/tablets and phones auto change the time....but I wasn't expecting my new Civic to auto update also. :)

I think the only one I have left to change is the one on my Propella...and I might just leave that one be.

Or just ride it an hour less.

Most modern stuff that's really a computer (and knows the date) autochanges. I bought a $10 timex bedside clock earlier this year, and it's got a DLS switch for +1, -1, auto, off.

I think my wife's car (2018 subaru) changes automatically. I think the aftermarket pioneer head unit it my car does. Our new smart TV does.
I think the only two items that we have that don't update are the microwave and my mechanical watch.

Already changed the stove, microwave and coffeemaker. Now that I think about it I need to do the sprinkler control.

I don't have any real analog stuff. Been contemplating buying myself a retirement gift. A vintage Ship's clock and barometer set, either Seth Thomas or Chelsea Clock Co.

They can be pricey, especially from an experienced clock guy. I want one already serviced and repaired, don't know how long these guys will be around.

I woke to take a pee last night...nothing unusual at my age. Auto changing clock radio happened to read 2:58...so I watched it go to 2:59, then 2:00...magic!

But this makes me wonder how this happens? Is it some kind of radio signal or will I need a new clock radio if they do eliminate the time changes?

^^^ Hah! Good question. If that happens, we may be stuck with a bunch of computers, phones, whatever....that will switch and we'll end up having to change them the opposite way.

Mrs mjohnson won't even change her watch if she's not in a new timezone for less than a week (opposites! - I change mine when I take off on a flight). These two particular points in the year are hard on her.

Yah, the AA-powered clock in the dining room is easy, even I can do that. Some years we let the stove just go. Seriously, what does a stove care what time it is? The cars, and even the $25 clock radio figures it out, why can't some kilobuck Korean thing do it?

(totally ignoring time-savings-politics but it's nice to wake to the sun again at 0545-0600. The last few weeks of mornings have been mighty dark).

GPS chip I guess. They're like pennies, and worth every penny so that I have one fewer device to adjust...

If the big change happens, then the various underlying systems will presumably also change. I think most of those clock radios and watches that set themselves to some sort of radio synced time will continue to work just fine because the radio time will be adjusted. There may be some, older, simpler devices that might not work, but I suspect those will be the exception rather than the rule.

Computers will be patched to work fine.

What might not get patched will be things like cars, and car stereos. They are computers, but the manufacturers might not be likely to go back and patch older systems. And if an older system needed to be patched, would everyone running an older car want to go to a dealer and pay whatever fee a dealer was going to charge to get their car updated?

Our dogs hate the fall back routine, yet they say two paws up for the spring forward change.

My wife is a antique clock collector She has over 12 old mechanical clocks, all working, and almost never exactly on time. I don't ever touch them, it is her hobby. She spends all day setting them for the time change. For the fall back, she just stops them, and re starts them an hour later.

All of my devices, even my watch, are automatically set. They are always right on time. Except for one old clock I keep in the bedroom. It was an alarm clock I used back in my single days. Now the alarm is turned OFF. It is just to display time if I wake up in the middle of the night. If something wakes me up, it is nice to glance at it to know if I have several hours to go back to sleep, or 5 minutes. Oh, I do have the lawn sprinkler timer in the garage that I have to set manually as well. I really don't much care if it is an hour off. I will set it next time I open the cover on the timer.

I had a clock like that. I think I got it as a teen in the early 80s. The alarm buzzer stopped working years ago. It still works, but my wife hated having it around. I bought a new clock earlier this year, and it now automatically sets.

Back in the day when I traveled on business, I wore a wristwatch that had dual time zones. Home and wherever I was.

I have a couple of lights on digital timers.
Those are the worst for resetting...imo.

Better than the old ones were you had to pull out the tabs!
That is if you can figure out the digital timer.

For all of you saying make DST year round - F that!
It was very nice being able to wake up and not have to fumble for the light this morning. Even by the winter solstice, it looks like the sun will rise at 7:30, I can live with that. But getting up and working when it still isn't light out, I don't like that at all.

I'm thinking all the people asking for year round daylight saving time are slackers that don't get up until noon.

You say it like that's a bad thing...

I'm in my office right now. If feels late, as in time to go home. I look at my watch and it's only 2pm.

I think the older I've gotten the more I hate this thing.
