Hyundai Elantra N driver pulled over for loud exhaust on stock car!

This one riles me up! Stock car with no modifications gets pulled over in California for sound and cop forces him to 'fix' to be able to drive again!

Hyundai is not supportive either. Really need this to go viral to make things right.

If indeed it is truly stock, (color me skeptical) and the car was sold new in the USA, the owner can make Hyundai prove it is legal. It had to meet the federal standards on hundreds of points of safety and sounds and performance.

Another reason why our trust \ confidence in law enforcement is so low

The cop was out of line, pulling some rank and running his mouth...slow night?

I feel bad for the car's owner..what a jam.

I feel bad for all my car buds in CA, you can't drive a stock 2022 Hyundai without being hassled? Sheeesh

Part of trying to re-fund the police, maybe?

My neighbor used to have one of those. Stock, It's way louder then my turbo Mitsubishi, that has an aftermarket 3" exhaust and that car isn't quiet.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-hyundai-elantra-n-loud-exhaust-police-california/

The car was being operated in track mode which changes the exhaust note.

When the test station tested for compliance they did not follow the procedure outlined in SAE J1492. The test station asked the driver which mode was the loudest and tested that mode and not the normal mode that the car defaults to when started.

I'm guessing you won't be moving to Cali any time soon.

It's a nice place to visit....

The cop sounded like he was very aware of the situation.

My guess is that the cop was trying to scare the kid so that he maybe doesn't do it again. If the cop believed what he said was the truth, what a dickhead.

Either way, since the car is stock, I can't imagine that Cali would be able to force the removal of "track mode." If the car is legal for sale, then I wouldn't expect them to be able to force the removal of track mode. I can see driving on the street in track mode being illegal (not saying it's right, but I could see that being a thing). And if that's the case, then I would assume getting caught driving in that mode would be a moving violation that qualified for some sort of ticket.

A couple of notes.

1 The cop was being a dick.
2 The cop has possibly dealt with a bunch of wankers and it's hard to imagine not being a dick after all of that.
3 It's possible that the kid was being a wanker, winding it out, etc... before the portion of the video that we saw so the cop was coming down harder.

Yep, that was addressed in the video. Apparently the law says testing should occur in "default" mode which would have been the quietest mode. But the car was tested in (I think the video said "sport" mode). The kid took it to the dealer who said "there's nothing to fix. It's stock." The video said that the kid is screwed because they won't test again because nothing was "fixed".

I'm assuming that with him going viral, eventually the state is going to have to perform the test correctly, and presumably, that will get the kid back. And I'm guessing he won't then drive the street in track mode.

I don't think a single one of your assumptions/presumptions/guesses is correct.

Maybe not. It's not like it's a business. The gov't don't care.

Awhile ago I read a story of some guy in a Pontiac GTO (the newer one) who got a ticket in MD for smoked tail light lenses. They were stock.

On one of my trips to California in my 911 I stopped to get gas. A CHIPS officer on a motorcycle pulled up to go inside the store. He looked over at my 911 and saw no front tag (gasp) and casually pulled out his ticket book, walked to the rear of the car, and saw Oklahoma tags. He put his ticket book away and strolled into the convenience store. I just smiled and kept pumping the gas. No doubt a resident would have received a ticket for no front tag.

Made you want to move to Cali, didn't it?

Yup, that's the law in CA, Glen. One of the reasons I insisted my kids run their front plates while living under our roof. One less reason for the cops to stop them IMO.
The kid in the Elantra knew he wasn't supposed to be running in track mode. We have some guys in our hood that do that on their way out of the hood and they're a pain in the a$$ as far as I'm concerned. NOW, GET OFF MY LAWN!

Meanwhile, off camera, a homeless man is shooting up and a Walgreens is being robed.

Yep, it's the law here to run a front plate. I didn't run one for a while and never got a ticket or pulled over for it. I did eventually find a guy selling a plate holder that screws into the hole in the front bumper for the big screw eye. I put that one to save myself the eventual trouble.

The kid may or may not have known that he wasn't supposed to drive in track mode. Some people are clueless. Or the cop may have seen that the kid had received at least one warning before. We just don't know the whole story.

The cop was an ass. All that extra commentary from him was not needed.
