What's Your Side Hustle
Not thinking about day job hustles but in any money making activities people up to in their spare time or to boost their retirement income
I've only ever had the one as since working after graduating I've never had enough spare time but during my internship I bought worn out racing slick tyres from F3 teams. Then sold them on to grass track racers who used them for a once a year tarmac race weekend. The over a 100% profit helped supplement my meagre salary Hoping this get interesting..... thanks to cockerpunk for this thread topic  |
I just helped a friend sell a bike he was given on Craig's List. Took the pictures and wrote the ad for him as he's pretty much computer illiterate. [He just turned 80 on Tuesday]
|
I sell old motorcycle parts on ebay to fund my classic bike habit.
|
I’m an engineer and I have cows… and they are a pain in the ass.
|
I play my guitar in seedy bars and flip gear on eBay and Reverb.
|
Two things:
I restore and sell vintage Japanese motorcycles. I am a trial consultant. In a previous life I was a trial attorney. I get hired by defense attorneys that either have a high profile criminal trial or they’re representing a defendant in a complicated drug or murder case and they don’t have a lot of experience. I help them with everything from picking a jury to crafting their closing argument. |
I scam people on the interweb.
|
I post on PPOT ... It doesn't pay squat but I make up for it in quantity :)

After Grandma passed away I rehabbed her (ours) guesthouse and decided to try AirB&B. We got our first booking. A young couple from Italy. They booked it for a month. $2000 extra. Of course we have to pay utilities but still. Time will tell.

Private Massages.

Been buying, rehabbing, renting and selling real estate since the early 1990’s.
Good news? I don’t do most of the crap work now. |
Stripping on OnlyFans

I hear them called your 5-9 job, instead of your 9-5 job.
I make telescopes better. |
I used to clean banks as my second job at night. I could do it any time between 5PM when they closed and 9AM when they opened again...or anytime on weekend after Friday closing (before Monday open). It gave me a lot of flexibility for my other side hustles and school (went full time at night) ...as I could go in after midnight and get it done before I had to go to my main job at 6AM.
|
My side hustle name is Gator, and they better use jimmies or Gator gets mad.

No side jobs. But a lot of DIY. There is no better way to make money. As a DIYer you don't just save the money you would have to pay someone for a task, but you are also able to buy things for cheap that others couldn't. Such as a high mileage car, or an older appliance, or a bicycle that needs a little work. And when you sell something, you can get it into good shape and get top dollar, where others just throw it on the curb, trade it in or bring it to Goodwill.
Once I am no longer holding down a full time job, I am sure I will have hobbies that produce some cash. But likely it will be break even at best. Otherwise it wouldn't be called a hobby! |
|
Golf…a little wager always keeps it entertaining.
|
I have art hobby. I have a studio in my home. I occasionally compete in national art events do commission work.
|
I do engineering consulting on the side.
|
My small hot-rod / hobby shop is self supporting, I buy, sell, fix and flip. I buy what I like, do a little or sometimes a lot of work then flip. I am moving in a different direction in the last year where I am moving towards consulting / advising / with some hands-on problem solving.
I'm targeting affluent people in my area, in the hobby that often is looking for a 'guy' to help them maintain, improve, etc. It's like planting seeds. I've had a few small jobs as I've limited so I can finish my rat-rod project to sell. |
Used to be the farm - did very well for a long time...while I still materially participate for tax purposes, I am working a lot less. Now horse boarding and a rental house.
Mostly for taxes and some supplimentary income. |
Home security camera and home network installs.
A few names you would recognize, mostly nice folks. |
Enjoying the replies, keep them coming
Sames as aigel, I try and fix my own stuff, with a couple of hours of Internet shopping and another 3 hrs rolling around under Mrs Ahabs car I saved myself 1000USD |
I have just registered as a substitute teacher.
|
I reload custom ammo for obsolete calibers.

Rental property
|
I like to see if anyone will give me a part time job teaching high school age kids carpentry, woodworking, general construction or architecture after I retired. Other then that, rentals keeps me a little busy. Nothing needs to be fixed since they are all fixed to the best of my knowledge. Maybe I can work in a coffee shop over seas targeting English speaking tourists for very little money? Live there for 3 months and come home do it again somewhere else next year?

Adjunct professor with the Naval War College, teach at the Washington Navy Yard. Teaching evening seminar to mid-career Officers: Navy, Coasties, Capitol Hill staffers (HASC/SASC), they're all whip smart, keeps me engaged.

Rental property.
Bought a fixer upper. Fixed it up while I lived there. After a couple years I bought another and rented out the first. Lather rinse repeat. At one point I was paying less than 800 per month total for 5 houses. Then a few years ago started selling off a few. Now up to 14 properties most of which are paid off. Primary residence is set to be paid off in 8 years when I retire. Always tell this story to younguns and recommend they buy a house. Get a roommate or two if you have to. |
I've always been impressed by the diversity and knowledge of the folks on Pelican over the years. From all kinds of backgrounds and areas of expertise....
Most here seem to have "figured it out", while following a path that works for them.... Pretty awesome :) |
Not really a side hustle, but more of a hobby as time permits, I restore wheels and certain aluminum automotive parts (mostly for friends). Its dirty work and requires a respirator but I've gotten quite good at it.
I recently finished this for a good friend: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668256610.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668256610.JPG |
