What would it take for this forum to automatically resize images?
I think this place is fine... but that feature would be really nice. Right now if you post a copied URL/link to large image it just jacks the entire thread. The old school BMW and Jag forums I frequent have this feature, but not the most popular porsche forum on the internet? Makes no sense. |
Agree. One solution is to upload the image itself, which will resize it to 800 pixels wide. They should increase that to 1,000 pixels, too, as most people are beyond low resolution screens. If you upload an image, you don’t have to worry about the link going bad. I like to sometimes tweak and resize images, anyway. Auto resizing seems to hurt the quality sometimes.

It "only" takes new software to run the board. A few grand for the software, and several grand for the migration to the new platform. If you want to start donating to the boards cost, I bet they will take donations.
Like most things in life, all it take is more money and a larger budget. |
With my Windows OS, I can right click on any image and there's a 'resize' menu item.
I have my camera settings already at the right image size, but on another forum they are too big, so I just use my 'resize' feature - easy peasey! Here's one right out of the camera.....a neighbor's house who covered their windows for Ian..,...I thought it was a nifty method. This used to be Greg Arnette's house - the sunglass guy....I was walking by one time with my board and he remarked "That's a great looking shape!" ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668201313.JPG |
Get a bigger monitor. Then you won't care.
This forum does resize if you upload. I intentionally upload as little as possible because while HDD space is cheap, it's not free, and I don't see the need to replicate thousands of OT images on the PP servers. I usually pay attention to image size if I crosslink. I will often just not post something if it's going to be huge. |
If you use a link for an image, then it can disappear at a later date. Perhaps some "value" to this forum is the images that can be seen here rather than "No Image Found." You can also increase or shrink the size of an image to be uploaded, avoiding the annoying huge images that force you to scroll left and right and up and down.

So.... no? The biggest 911 forum on the internet run by one of the most successful porsche parts companies, can't afford it.

I post on PPOT 99.9% of the time on my phone. When uploading a picture, it gives you an option to resize it, but I don’t know if that is actually to resize it or less pixels?
As you can see, it says original large medium small but has the same file size. The other day I quoted somebody and my post was edited, because the picture in the quote was too big. using my phone, I didn’t see it. I presume the original picture in the quote was too big to? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668657484.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668657484.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1668657716.jpg |

Uploading the pictures directly to pelican parts has multiple downsides:
1. You need all the images on your phone or desktop, you can't grab them from the internet, or other posts made at other forums 2. The storage of this data cost, AND the traffic, goes directly on PP servers. Copying/pasting URLs from other hosting solutions (imgur, etc) pushes the cost of storage/traffic onto other servers 3. If I am needing as much help on a project as possible, and crossposting my build to here and rennlist, for example, I need to upload all the images twice. Big PITA. It would require less storage on the PP servers, have less traffic, and be easier to use if it just resized images appropriately. |

It wouldn't cost an extra dollar to simply update the list of moderators.... unless one has been directed to "do nothing", and let the chips fall where they may with regards to the forums. That's just my .02 worth....
Were it simply a $$$ issue, methinks Pelicans would gladly contribute, and the former head bird might just know how it all works behind the curtain too ;). We just don't matter .... anymore :(. |
I guess we just have to let it go and let Byrons be Bryons.
|
I think they call this "a 1st world problem".

I hate Tapatalk
|
Still annoying. I'm not going to resize any images I post around here and just direct everyone to this thread.

Someday these forums will disappear and we won't have that problem anymore :D.... |
We're gonna need a bigger monitor.
|
I use a browser plugin called Stylus, and it helps a ton. Especially when people just grab full-size photos from another source. If you know some basic CSS you can easily fix it.

Also, Tapatalk allows you to choose your upload size and automatically scales. Sent from my SM-G988B using Tapatalk |
Forget the pictures how about the catalog. Search window is like a slot machine, wonder if the bmw guys get Porsche parts popping up? Anyone else have trouble finding things in the catalog?
|
No worries....in two more days, it will be down for the weekend...lol

Not so sure about that scenario. But it is good for reading when images haven't been scaled well.

Tapatalk is OK for occasional use. It pales in comparison to a computer with a 21 inch or bigger high res monitor.
|
Dudes... .this is still annoying as ****. Who do we have to email to get automatically resized images? I have images on my phone, and I want to share to the forum.
If I use tapatalk to upload, they still come in huge. So I can upload to imgur from my phone, but resizing in imgur no longer works.... so that would mean I'd need to get the images onto my desktop, resize in photoshop, then upload to imgur, then share on the forum. Obnoxious. |
PM one of the mods listed ;)

On any new post, go to advanced mode, click the large blue bar that is pretty simple, and says click here to upload photos. Find the photos and drag and drop and then say save, and they are on Pelican. New forum software would be very expensive, and even more expensive is the time and money to migrate the forum. You are free to set up your own forum on a computer and pay for the bandwidth to allow a bunch of car folks to chat. Look into the costs, Pelican is eating those costs to give us a free playground. |
I use Tapatalk to view this forum, when I need to edit something I have to go to the actual forum. The picture thing allows an option for picture size on Tapatalk and I always pick the middle option.

Some simple things that wouldn't cost anything but a few minutes of someone's time.... but naw. |

HTML has a style indicator that you can set image width to be a percentage of screen width. |
