He was a world class BSer, and when passengers would react to the wipers running a single pass on a sunny day he would tell them that Porsches have automatic moisture sensing wipers and it likely saw a speck of water from a bug or something. They were all impressed, and in the early 1980s automatic rain sensing wipers were a thing of science fiction, and major BS from teller of tall tails.

I had a Superbeetle that would do that.

There was a LOT of parts interchange on the two cars.

The "intermittent" rain sensing wipers on my C-class Mercedes work great. That is my default wiper setting. However it is a bit disconcerting because the interval can vary so much from one wiper cycle to the next.

My wife's grocery-getter has an adjustable-speed intermittent mode and I do use it when driving that car, but I find myself fiddling with the rate setting.

rarely i just use the manual flick as required

I do not understand why there is no Analog Dial
not stalk, no butten

just 0-------------MAX WIPE

Dial a Yield as they say

I use intermittent a lot more than the constant.
It always seems to be drizzling.

Right, it's rare for me to put the wipers into any of the "full-on" settings vs intermittent

I use the intermittent setting for the wipers quite a bit.

When my BMW's wipers are in normal operation, they'll automatically kick down to intermittent mode when the car comes to a stop, like at a traffic light, then resume the selected speed once the car starts moving again. I don't like the wipers beating back & forth in a frenzy while I'm sitting still...especially if I'm running them at a higher speed in heavier rain.

On a related note, I always see people driving around in a light drizzle with their wipers going at warp speed, even while stopped at a traffic light. At best, the conditions might require one wipe every 15-20 sec or so. What do these people do when it rains a little harder? "Sorry, no driving today, can't make the wipers go fast enough"

I really like the SC's intermittent wiper setup. Being able to change the frequency of the wipes is great.

I use them all the time.
