Now what do you do?
So, the unthinkable has happened. Miscalculation has started WWIII.
What do you do? Where do you go? My answer depends on where I am. I live near the Port of Long Beach most of the time. I'm toast. Literally. No way I could get anywhere, and I wouldn't want to die stuck in traffic on the freeway. I guess I would try to call my family and tell them that I love them. If I were at my mountain house, a small community in the middle of a National Forest. I would call my kids, tell them I love them and tell them to get up here, if they can. Based on where they live, that would just be possible. We have supplies but the forest fires that would start would probably take us out sooner or later. It's basically a case of the living envying the dead. Pretty f#@king dark but that's the world we live in.

We live far enough outside of the city center to hopefully not be smoked by the initial blast, however, there are some USAR bases north of us, so we may get caught on the crossfire of nuke blasts.
If we do survive, heading south to the family homestead in a town of 3,000 people. Then just shoot all zombies that wander onto the property.

I live within the initial blast radius of Picatinny Arsenal. I won't even have time to turn around and utter "wha...".

Now what do you do?
Stock up on beer. It might be hard to buy any afterwards.

Isn't the flight time from USSR about 20 minutes? Assuming the boomers aren't parked off the east coast.
If that is the case, I can think of one way to pass 20 minutes.

Biggest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the US is about 10 miles away. I ain't got a chance; this place will glow for eons.
Hope to semi-retire soon to a bit of land in the middle of nowhere. |

Got you beat, James. The US Naval weapons station is three miles west of us. We'll be gone in a jiffy or less.

I'm currently sitting less than a mile as the crow flies from the facility that manufactures a lot the US's nuclear weapons. I don't think I'd have time to run.

I am 13 miles from Tinker AFB as the bomb damage flies. Far enough that only a really big nuke will take us out right away. I am not sure how we will survive a full blow WW3 nuclear war, if at all.
The only real hope is whatever enemy we have that sends a nuke to our shores understands we have a navy and many submarines with enough warheads to take out any country. I certainly hope our commander in chief goes full blown, retaliation, and eliminate them from the planet make them pay dearly. We have a very capable Air Force and lots of bombs and bombers and missiles. Only MADD has kept us from the apocalypse. They need to know, we will fight back. As to what I will do, try to survive as best I can. The electrical grid will be toast from the EMP of a nuke. That takes down the internet, and smart phones are paperweights. No utilities for very long. No food, no gas no water.

Way back in high school, my (still) best friend joked that he would climb up on the roof with a drink and wait for the flash and blast wave as the missiles hit NYC. At the time we lived about 10 miles from the city.
