Make Bruins Great Again

FLAPS kid gave us a scare.
My daughter said the check engine light came on so she dropped by the nearby FLAPS to have them check the code. The kid plugged in the scanner but said there wasn't a code to read. He told her it "might be something with power steering but since he couldn't get a code to read she would probably need to take it to the dealership!"
When my daughter came over, I grabbed the keys to check things out. As soon as I started it up I saw the problem. Turns out she had low tire pressure! The big drop in temps lately brought the tire pressures down enough to trigger the sensor. I wasn't too upset that my daughter didn't know what the light on the dash meant (and was happy that she didn't just ignore it) but the FLAPS kid was totally clueless and should have known better. Cranked up the compressor and grabbed my tire gauge. Five minutes and I fixed the "power steering problem" and save her a few hundred bucks. Score: Dad:1 FLAPS:0

As far as TPS are concerned, I saved myself some $ a couple of years ago. My wife's car indicated a/the TPS(s) weren't working properly. I never had any experience with them. I thought I'd ask the stealershisp about them. They wanted $100 just to check it out and potentially a few times that to service/replace them. Went to an indi place. They offered to replace all four for $114. Then I thought, since I had bought the tires on the car at Discount tire, I'd ask them. They replaced all four for $0.00. Lesson learned, don't ever go to a stealership.

Your daughter is smarter than an ex - lets call her Lisa. Lisa said when the oil light comes on next time you fuel up you add some oil too.

Had this with my son yesterday. Almost the same.
Told him if the warning light is yellow we can address it tonight. If it’s red, stop the car inmediately where it is safe to do so.

We were at my MIL's house a couple of weeks ago. It too said low tire pressure on the MILs car. My wife was driving and it did not specify which tire. the MIL of course has no pressure gauge, and none of the air pumps at the two gas stations we stopped at were working. She said she would ask her son to come put air in the tires. He lives just a few miles away from her. She has her son, the two grandsons and their sons with two sons each, all are driving age. With 7 males of driving age within a few miles of her I did not feel too bad about letting them take care of the problem. I am going to give her a tire pressure gauge at Thanksgiving. I have several spares. I know she will not use the gauge, but the next person will have it to not have to guess at the pressure.

I can't remember the last time I tried to use the air at a gas station and the nozzle wasn't cut off, likely by some loser using it to smoke meth. I carry a good gauge and mini compressor with me all the time. But I'll usually just go to Discount Tire and let them top them off and tip the kid. Much faster if I can't wait until I get home.

[QUOTE=GH85Carrera;11854246]I have looked everywhere on the dash of my 85 911 and the 86 El Camino, and I can't find a single one of those icons.
headlight and rear defroster switches have those symbols, as does the wiper and turn signal/high beam lever. By the mid 80's some of these had become fairly ubiquitous

Counterclockwise?

I was watching a woman attempt to fill her tires while I was getting gas.
It was a coin operated air compressor. She didn't put money in it so she was actually letting air out. Then she drove away.

One of my customers from long ago had some high end Mercedes S class. His daughter borrowed it for a trip to visit friends in Colorado. She noticed the temp needle pointing off the scale and she just assumed the needle had fallen off of the gauge. She kept driving until the engine seized, and she came to a screeching halt on a two lane road. The good news is a man behind her saw her rear tires lock up, and he was smart enough to stop in time. He put the car in neutral, and pushed it off of the road. The wrecker destroyed the front bumper getting it loaded.
My customer friend was not real happy with his daughter. She was very lucky that the man behind her was a stand up man and good guy and took her to a local car rental place and she rented a car with daddy's credit card. He was happy his daughter was safe, and he was ready to wring her neck when she returned.

Where is the one I had just yesterday show up on my digital screen.(2022 Civic)? A black rectangle almost the size of the mph digits. Just like number 10, but with nothing inside the box.

A few years ago my sis called dad and told him the "gas light" was on, but she had just filled up. He told her not to worry about it ....
Of course when the engine seized a bit later, dad paid for it to be replaced... Mom still maintains it was all dad's fault ![]() Here's yer sign ![]() |
