I’m liking the new Harley Sportster!

Keeping some of the old school looks with modern technology. Dropped about 80 pounds and now has 95 hp.

Very nice looking bike.
Will it idle at a stoplight?

Mine idled just fine, but a buddy built it and had it dyno tuned with straight pipes ....

Blip, blip

I'm having mixed feelings about applying the name "Sportster" to what is an entirely different bike. I like the new bike, but I'm torn thinking they should have used another name.

That said, Porsche still uses "911", Ford still uses "Mustang", and so on. Harley has been long overdue for a major overhaul, no question about that, and I do like what they are doing. I would sure like to see a serious canyon carver on this platform, which has actually been rumored.

I'll always have a soft spot for the old "girls' bike", though. Bought my first one in 1978, still have the third, purchased in 1980. Everyone who has ever called it a "girls' bike" has been invited to show me they can get it started. 10:1 compression with no compression release or ignition retard, big healthy cams with lots of overlap, ported heads, and no mercy... she senses fear... rewards commitment... and there's only one way to get her running...

I bought mine from my buddy after his dad passed .... buddy had given it to his dad .... it was his 13th Sportster and all he ever rode. Buddy said that as a teen, his dad told him when he could finally start "his dad's" bike he was allowed to ride it ....

Prolly a LOT tamer than yours tho' .... mine sure was.

I'm thinking of driving my SC with SSI's and dual M&K mufflers the same way.
Every stoplight I will constantly rev it to 6K to keep it running.

Years ago I was going through the 'hood in my Carrera at about 25 mph (Fabspeed Euro premuffler and GHL sport muffler) sounds awesome, but no where near Harley loud. Lady yelled at me to slow down .

I was cognizant about my Sportster too .... it was meant for open country roads.

I bet nobody ever told this guy that his pride and joy - he named her "Sweet Cocaine" - was a "girls' bike". Not more than once, anyway...

The late Ralph "Sonny" Barger. He was instrumental in the formation of a small motorcycle club. Passed away a few month ago. Photo is from the early '60's, when his club was just getting off the ground. He was a small, but rather scrappy individual, so he preferred Sporties.

My ‘04 XL 1200 is one of the last years of the evo engines that still had a carb. Harley went to fuel injection at the end of 2006. Idles just fine. 😁

As I've said before, Kurt, if I were ever to "modernize", that's the one. Not only beautiful, but the best, most practical, reliable "real" Sporty ever made. Hang onto that one...

Yes, ever since Suzuki started making the engines for Harley Davidson the reliability has been excellent.

I like it! About as far from a 70's era Iron-head as you can possibly get, which is exactly what is needed today......

I knew what I was looking for when I bought it. Your description is what I had in mind. Took a while to find one that was still completely stock. I’ve probably had over 10 Sportsters over the last 40 years, but I think this may be the last one I own. Going to hang onto it.
