Decades ago our Seabee Unit was on a combined maneuvers with a Marine LSB at Camp Talega. The Camp and exercise area bordered Christianitos Creek which separated Camp Pendleton North from the Southern most boundary of San Clemente. There was a new development that was now on the north side of the creed in San Clemente (much has changed since this time).

While we were there a little girl was dragged from her back yard by Coyotes and killed.

We were returning from one of the exercise areas at dusk and came across some boys from the Scout Sniper School and Fish and Wildlife guys. They were all decked out with Gillies and NVGs. On the Coyote traces across the creek they say up that night and took a few out; we could hear the shots all night. Not a whole bunch of shots, but more than a few. Some of our guys ran into coyote carcasses on those trails. Evidently they used this method to kind of discourage all but the most brazen. Of course that was before California put huge restrictions on shooting the vermin bastards.

Yep that's what I was thinking. When my 23 year old daughter was in 1st grade I was a chaperone on class field trip to a sheep farm and they had a big white Great Pyrenees as a guard dog for the sheep, he was big!!!
My brother-in-law and sister-in-law have two dogs that are Great Pyrenees/Pit Bull mix, male and female. The male is huge and I call him Horse!!! He's a big ol sweetheart though and tries to sit in your lap. [emoji23]

Read this story to Everest. Everest's response to Caspar? "Good job bro". "Now quit being a whiner and get back to work".

This is Everest. One of many wonderful Pyrs we've had. The wife never goes hiking without him. For the record, I'm not a dog person. I like dogs, but dogs live outdoors and have jobs to do. I gotta admit though that Pyr's are damned amazing animals.

Kind of like the mastiffs my family had for the last 50 or so years. Amazing dogs, shame that all of these big breeds die pretty young. And one ornery mastiff >> 10 'yotes. Or a lion or two if lore is correct from the Colosseum days...

Wouldn't be messing with these guys. Friendly, but they're always tending the flock.

Nice thing about pyrs. If they are all business, they’ll let you know. That “look”, a quick little growl, then turn away and back to what they were doing. If you mess with one after that, well, you were warned.
