Sheepdog protecting his flock

Thought this was a rather heartwarming story. One heck of a dog. Bloody coyotes are a scourge. Have them on my property and it's impossible to get rid of them.

Some people don't deserve dogs!

That pup must be one tough dog to dispatch that many coyotes on his own!

We've got the 'yotes up here on our little NM mesa - and they're skillful, coordinated and viscous! Lore is that more than a few pet-lovers here have been denied cat adoptions as "you're just feeding the coyotes".

(our cat's stay inside, maybe with a std poodle to deal with, but he's not too hungry)

Great story. Damn coyotes...

We had two in our front yard just a couple of days ago. We've been in the same house for over 30 years, which used to be outside of the city in a semi-rural, unincorporated part of the county. "Suburban creep" has since engulfed us and, with that, we thought the coyotes (and bears and cougars) would be pushed out. Bears and cougars have become exceedingly rare around here (although they still trap and relocate one or the other every few years), but the coyotes are thicker than ever. Anyone leaving a pet outside after dark eventually loses it, even big dogs, like Labs and such.

I used to shoot them in the neighborhood, but I was told by the police after we became incorporated that is was illegal to do so inside of city limits. They are wrong, of course (I've studied the applicable law, and have consulted a lawyer as well), but it just wouldn't be worth the hassle to prove they are wrong. Meanwhile, new residents, who don't know any better, keep losing pets. Signs on telephone poles tell the story.

That dog looks like a Great Pyrenees, not something you want to mess with if you're a coyote.

I looked after the mechanical systems for a very large rural residence years ago and the owners had two dogs. One very large and energetic golden and the other was a Great Pyrenees.
The golden would go out and make trouble with the coyotes and then the big dog would go out and clean up.
When they are outside all the time, their fur is so thick that they don't get hurt too much during the encounters.

Coyotes are target practice.

I saw an article about this yesterday. In the article that I saw it said that the dog was a young great pyrenees. Still, big dog or not, taking out 8 out of 11 is impressive.

There is a ranch 3/4 of a mile south of us that must have an Elly May Clampett like resident. They have several sheep, goats, chickens, Guineafowl and turkeys and one donkey. The donkey is the protector. A donkey will take on a mountain loin and kill the mountain lion. All the critters are in a grassy field next to the house. It is all visible to cars driving by.

^^^^ This. Most coyotes would not fare well against a large dog ... but a pack of 'em (dawgs too) is a whole 'nuther matter.

Good dawgy !!!

That's really something. The guy said it went missing for 3 days?!?!

How it was that jacked up and didn't get finished somewhere else, and THEN go home is even more amazing.

My buddy has a chihuahua named Rico. He was doing yardwork and 3 coyotes attacked Rico about 100 feet from him. Rico went nuts, Bob heard and took off toward the attack. He said the 'yotes just gave up and ran off.

Rico lived, and the Vet nearly completely shaved him to dress his wounds. Now he's just a cranky old bastard and only a select few can touch him.

He jumps in my lap every time I'm there. But I can't pet him too much or he'll unload on me. Doesn't break skin, but it sounds like hell.

Memory of a phone conversation with Evren...said he was going to dog sit for his mom, but he was worried about the safety of his German Shepherds. His mom's dog? Anatolian Shepherd. Another breed that fears no coyote...a documented wolf killing breed.

Oh..all was fine with his German Shepherds.

Large bore air rifles are intriguing - and yes, I know they're not silent, but they seem deadly enough.

Our mule deer are so numerous and destructive these last few years that while we used to joke (ish) that we needed some bow hunters to pare down the crowd - now I bet not a soul would hear a 30-06. (we are on the mesa above the well used local shooting range, so this might actually work) Anybody want any new mexican venison?
