I lost a nephew to suicide yesterday
I learned this morning that one of my nephews, a 26-year-old former Marine, took his life yesterday. The anguish in my cousin's voice this morning was indescribable. There were no signs or indications that he was in that much pain. I feel horrible.

No such thing as a "former" Marine...his brothers in mourning. Sorry to hear. I can only imagine the pain of his parents.

I'm sorry to hear it David. The suicide rate for ex-military is alarming. It has touched my family. My condolences for your loss.

Condolences to you and his family and friends. Unfortunately, Marines (as another has already said 'there are no ex-Marines') are trained to be tough. Unfortunately, he had the strength to keep it hidden until it was too late. Prayers for all to find peace in this horrible circumstance.

A very good friend of mine of 30 years had his son kill himself with a 380 Beretta before I met him. It caused him to do a lot of soul searching which in the end made him a more temperate an d reflective man'. If he hadn;t gone through that soul search I doubt we would have become friends. What sealed the deal was when he was in the hospital for a quadruple bypass and I went in a sat with him for a coupla hours.
For 16 years after I moved up here to LV we would talk on the phone for 3 to 4 hours a week. He always thought that no body would miss him after he was gone..I told him he was wrong and as it turns out I was right because I miss him dearly. He passed away at 81 of congestive heart failure in May 19. The last time I talked to him I knew it would be the last..he didn't engage in the day to day things that we would normally talk about...his last words to me were, "Ted I have to go." I told him to take care...Two weeks later his wife called me.... My go to guys that I have known for decades have all gone away..

Quote:
So is it any wonder that these guys don't have the emotional grounding or resiliency to cope and fall into isolation and despair? What is needed is some clarity to unwind that mass of brooding detached emotional despair. To resolve their issues. The WW2 gen had a moral and ethical certitude that what they were fighting for was a good cause, had a stoic suck it up mind set...where when they came home they largely sat in silence to what they had been through and drank to placate the nightmares...

It's a ****ed up situation all around for veterans. Especially with the current climate. I'm not sure if it'll ever stop. VA is required to do annual Columbia screening from any provider that you see. If one says yes to all questions. They walk you to the er then inpatient. It's a hard screen and i don't think anyone is ever truly honest. It's a shame, as the VA has a lot of resources. Call the VA main number and it has an option for the crisis line. There's even a number you can text. VA takes behavioral health very seriously now.
It's pain and some lose the battle before others. I don't think there will ever be a cure... I guess being proactive is the only way moving forward. A simple question. "are you struggling". Is enough to get an honest answer out of those that are in crisis.... Ah that sucks still.
