Conor McG's schit-talking doesn't bother me, it's entertaining and I'm a bit of a ST'er myself, if I'm being honest. :)
It's the whole leprechaun act and all of the stupid tattoos, I just want to stomp him. And his mouth just never stops going...the press conference between him and Diaz before the first fight was classic...McG wouldn't shut up and Diaz just leaned back and said, "faaaaak you..." I knew right then that he was going to win, should have put money on it. |
Mohamed Ali was the biggest trash-talker ever but that was different, he was intelligent and funny as hell plus he could back up absolutely anything he ever said, (except for one time against Frazier). :)
McGregor is a punk. |

I don't follow MMA, but didn't Connor and Rhonda both have really amazing rises and records. They both got to the top or nearly the top and then got knocked down. I would think that it would be hard to not be cocky when your unbeaten or nearly so. I feel like I saw M Ali being a little cocky back in the day too. I assume these are the only athletes that were near or at the top or looked like they were going to attain the top spot. And as stated, I am sure that they are encouraged to act like that.

But, I could be wrong. Like I said, that's just from a cursory/superficial view. |

That is absolutely the story with both Rousey and McGregor, and I agree that it is probably next to impossible for a sports figure to temper their cockiness when experiencing success like they both did. BTW, I think that brother Higgins is FOS :D when it comes to his MMA-WWF comparisons, but he already knows that! |
I'll be working Fedor's fight against Bader on February 4, 2023, at the Forum. It's going to be a blast!

I'm going to have to add a fourth exclamation point to your SUX!!!! rating, bub! |

In college I worked in the stadium for several concerts and a wrestling match. I suspect your work is a bit more interesting. |

My son hates the idea of a street fight but his confidence takes the fear out of the equation. He said his main concern is a well placed sucker punch. |

Alexander looks like he’s a hit man for the Russian mob. He probably is actually. |

Bader is built like Batman but Fedor has one punch knockout power. Or at least he used to have. But Bader knows kicked his butt 2 years ago.

I’m not sure I understand your question. My son is a gentle giant. He’s a 6’4” 240lb special education teacher. If your wondering if he sits around trying to start street fights you’d be wrong. We’ve just talked about it hypothetically. I guess my final opinion would be that standing and banging is cool in the movies but in real life I’m trying to get the fight to the ground. |

Just the way you worded it made me afraid maybe he was putting himself in situations where this could be a real concern, not just a hypothetical one. I'm glad to hear he is not, and you guys are just talking it over hypothetically. I've done the same with my two sons, with my overriding message being "just don't - it's never worth the risk". And, yes, we've discussed the "extremes" of that risk. As I've belabored previously, running into "that guy". Beyond that, we have also discussed the "other end" of the risk - "winning". I think most of us saw the video in another thread wherein a really big guy punches some idiot that had knocked his phone out of his hand. Knocked him out, which resulted in the guy falling over backwards and smashing his head on the pavement and going into convulsions. He could just as well have died. That's what "winning" a street fight often looks like. "Winning" could change our lives forever, and not in a good way. Anyway, I'm heartened to hear that none of this is a concern for you and your son. It isn't for us, either. No more than just a hypothetical exercise. |

I "Swear the God" as my ex mother in law used to say, I have watched the Ali Foreman Rope a Dope finale more times than I can count. This video gives a breakdown of the final flying of fists with slow-mo and stop action with articulate narrative. Video should start where the breakdown begins. If not, go to 4:15. Even Afterburn can appreciate this one. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nCOvjkbEn3c?start=254" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Exactly. I’m not perfect by any means but I can honestly say that I’ve helped to raise two boys that are good humans. That I can hang my hat on. I think a lot of people on this forum can say the same. [emoji482] |

And, yeah, pro athletes are on a whole different plane than us mere mortals. It's hard to appreciate from the grandstands, or from even just outside of the ring. While I've have never had the opportunity to be in a ring with this level of athlete, I did get a glimpse into this world on the soccer field. I had the opportunity to play on the practice squad against our Seattle Sounders when I was 16-19 years old. At times it felt as though me and the rest of that squad were just extra orange cones for them to run their drills around. Just a whole different level. |
Yup. NFL linemen are 300-lb guys who could spot me three steps, in my prime, and catch me in two seconds. Whole 'nuther level.

Got to train with the wizard himself UFC legend Ryan Hall. Here he is catching BJ Penn in an Imanari roll to backside heel hook. Pretty much retired BJ Penn.

I'm wearing the Wakanda rashguard. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1671993974.jpg |
Pro fighters are on another level. Here's Max "pain" Griffin literally tearing a guys ear off with an elbow. UFC Vegas 13.

Very, very cool stuff, Rod! What an amazing opportunity.
I guess the best thing about these guys, beyond their willingness to help us mere mortals, is their ability to "throttle back" a bit. Still, they give us a glimpse... which is plenty for me... |

Lets not forget the ladies....Aspen Ladd female beast mode.

That begs the obvious question, Rod - now that you have had a chance to grapple with both a top male, and a top female athlete, would she even stand a snowball's chance against him? I think I know the answer...
Our friend Rawknee'sTurbo is much more a fan of your sport than myself (but other than that he seems alright... ;) ) , and he's had a lot to say about the male/tranny presence in female MMA. It just looks so grossly unfair to me. From what I've seen the "guys" just absolutely dominate the "real" girls. I hope that doesn't spell the end for the ladies in the end. |
Quote:
You would be correct again Jeff… The female fighters, as tough as they are, wouldn't stand a chance against their male UFC counterparts, even assuming no size difference. |

Ryan Hall is the guy that someone messes with in a bar and lives to regret it. Have you seen the video where he detains the drunk guy at a diner until the cops come? |
I forgot about that one. Typical Ryan.....so calm the entire time.
