Need to glue a wooden spindle

The middle of a 14" spindle is broken where it is only 5/8" wide. Probably a soft wood. It is fit into the back of a headboard so it gets pressure put on it when you lean back. Where it is going makes it impossible to put a pin inside for strength.



I tried using wood glue but it won't hold because it is getting pressure perpendicular to the spindle and it snaps.

I need something super strong. Super Glue doesn't work with porous material. I thought about JB Weld but wanted to get some expert opinions if there is something even better.

Any advise from experts with experience?

Try to avoid "Leaning Back" nudge, nudge, wink, wink,.....

Can you cut/grind both sides of the break down to make a smooth gluing surface?
It might shorten your length down too much...a filler/spacer might be needed.

A good wood glue will hold if smooth surface area is available.

If I cut the break it would be too short and a filler would stick out like a sore thumb.
In some ways I think having the uneven joints helps give it more surface to bond. I just need to the strongest possible adhesive.

I'd drill out both pieces to accept a small dowel to strengthen the joint. Just normal two part epoxy would do the job.

This is probably your best bet. Get a dowel in there - a nice sized one too!

Why is it impossible to put a dowel inside? Possibly drill top section 10mm dia x 1 1/2 deep and drill lower section 10mm x 3/4" deep, place 3/8x 1 1/2 dowel in top section cover with glue install and work dowel down to lower section with blade.

id use a steel rod. the hard part is drilling center and straight on a jagged end grain

I know it'd stick out like a sore thumb, but I'd make a whole new one using a 1/8" steel rod with some wooden beads from a craft store strung on it. If it's in the middle of all the rest of the spindles you might not notice that it doesn't match.

I can't use a dowel to pin it because the upper and lower holes are completely immovable. If I pin it, then it will not go back into the frame. If I cut one end so it will go in, that end will flop around without anything holding it.

For wood I usually use Elmer's White Glue.

Elmers Wood glue (yellow) didn't hold. Is white stronger?

You did not understand what I suggested, drill the top hole deep so that the entire dowel will fit in and assemble pcs into frame and lower dowel.

OK, I kinda see what you are saying. Unfortunately my skills don't match the needed work and I don't have any equipment to drill the hole straight and center for both halves and I imagine that I only have one shot at it to get it right.

The holes don't have to be prefect. A little over sized would be OK as long as you used lots of epoxy glue. In fact it may help assembly.

Don't have a drill press and no way to hold the spindle steady while drilling. I have a regular bench press but how do I drill level?
Also, Epoxy instead of JB Weld?

I'm totally unskilled
