What is this thing?

My pal just got a new F150, (2020, not brand new, but you'd never know it. I digress) it's pretty deluxe. The extra key had this gadget hooked to it, but he doesn't have any idea what its for. He's been looking through the owners manual, but so far he can't figure it out. (The button at the end isn't magnetic. he checked)

Does anyone here have any ideas?

That's for identifying the key when in a "key safe," it plugs into a socket, then when you type in the stock number, a ring around the socket lights up when you open the door to the key safe. The dealer should have kept it to reuse on another car.

That's just wrong to put that on a key ring of a Ford that was just sold. My first guess was that it was a sensor that the parts department sells a lot of.

Perfect timing. My boss’ Range Rover has been in the shop waiting on parts for a month. His loaner has that object on the key ring. We were wondering what it was.

That’s a plug to stop you from puckering when you see the sticker price on a well optioned pickup.

Is this for a vehicle or a home?

Not sure I understand.

Does it have a name so I can Google it?

Baz, this is the website I found yesterday after Steve C identified the tag.

This unit is a little different, but I assume the principal is the same; you type in the stock number of the item you need the key for and the ring lights up around the one you need (and probably releases the magnetic grip)

Clever, really.

Ha!

This is the KEYper Systems safe. The plug looks exactly like the first pic.

OK thanks! Now it makes sense. Goes into a cabinet that requires a code to gain access....and then another code for each key, right?

I agree...very ingenious!

When you enter a code to get into the box, you get choices on what you want to do. If taking out a key, one choice is the stock number. Open the door, and the light around the plug identifies it.

If the key was never put in there, it’ll tell you. If someone else checked it out, it’ll tell you who.

Another alternative is a lockbox that hangs on a window and you use an electronic key to open the box.

You can access anything this way and don’t have to get the keys in advance.
