South Carolina DMV was a piece of cake. Even got “Veteran” on my license ( for some reason). In and out no problems.

No. They don't even want to look at copies. They look at the original(s) to verify your identity and give them back to you. I just took the copy of my s.s. card because I had ont handy & asked the lady if that would have been OK. She said they didn't accept copies.

Doing the TSA Pre-Check paperwork was twice as difficult as the Real ID papers.

The Real ID was a breeze.

That was my experience.

That's what's weird. Why was the protocol different (for you vs me)? The lack of consistency in how it's done (within even the same state) adds to the confusion IMO.

Two of the perks to federal employment...

1) I don't need a RealID from my state, as my work ID covers that
2) For TSA Pre-check, all I had to do was check a box on my travel site to opt in (for free) :D

stevej37 12-29-2022 10:07 AM

^^^ I applied for the TSA right at the beginning when they offered it.
Had to make an appointment at a local gov't building. Closed door meeting with a lady that asked me many questions...filled out forms...had to show birth certificate, DL, and passport.
Took a good half hour to finish.

The only thing I can say is: IT's THE DMV! Maybe she made her own copies, but I didn't see her do it.

You know what is a real ID (for free), doesn't require trip at the DMV, and a real benefit at the border ? A global entry card.
Sure you pay for Global Entry (one time for 5y), but man I recently passed through immigration in SFO in literally 47 seconds ( I timed it) vs 1H+ for the rest of the poor bastards at the tail end of the plane. And yeah, it's a real ID and same size as a driver license.

My wife and I both have our Real ID and our TSA Pre-check. We also have passports. We did it all to make sure we were prepped to go anywhere in the world should our NAVY daughter need us there. Going through airports is a breeze. The TSA Pre-check and the pass ports were the biggest pains to get. Real ID was a piece of cake.

For the record, the global entry "card" does all of the above (works as TSA PRE and Real ID) AND it gets you thru immigration in mere minutes... Just an FYI, if you're gonna get something new, get that one as it encompasses all the "lower" programs... takes a 5 min interview at the airport customs once approved...

The last person I know in Illinois that went to get one set up an appointment and it took nearly 4 hours anyway. In fact they had a bunch of people waiting due to their incompetence and just sent them home with "Make another appointment".

As you can imagine many of us don't have them.

Last time I checked (8 years ago) I don’t think South Carolina was set up yet to issue them.

That said my license is good to 2025. They are good for 10 years.

Thank you for this. My wife already looked into it. Apparently the Military does not accept this for going onto their bases. They do however accept the Real ID.

I’m lucky in that my retired military ID card is considered real ID.

Nice to know the government bureaucrats recognize an ID from a military source as your real identity.
