Sears Hometown stores- all to be closed

The slow death spiral of Sears continues . They have announced all Hometown stores to be closed . That leaves about 12 Sears stores in north America still open . How the mighty have fallen ☹️

What surprises me more is that JC Penney stores are still around.

I thought they went TU years ago. Now you'll be telling me KMart and Montgomery Wards still have a few stores.

I remember when in 5th grade..my neighbor bought a 300 cc motorcycle from Sears. It was the first bike in the neighborhood and I really wanted one. (I think it was an Italian make)

He only had it about a year and it started giving him problems. I think he ended up shoving it in the garage and it stayed there.

At my high school, there was a large Sears store almost next door. I regularly stopped there on the trip home to drool and dream in the tool department. They had a PA system with a horrid very high pitched squeal. I had to walk around with my fingers in my ears. More than once the employees would ask why I had my finders in my ears, and I said due to the squeal for the PA system and it was like telling them there were unicorns flying around as they were too old to hear it. Several of my high school friends said they heard it as well.

I really do miss the Sears tool department. Like the Montgomery Ward plumbing department back then had more plumbing stuff than most Ace Hardware stores do today. I don;t think I ever went to a Kmart. We had TG&Y here in Oklahoma and Otasco as great stores. All gone now.

I did a quick google search for Allstate motorcycles and I was pleasantly surprised by all these models! (It's a rare swap meet that doesn't have an Allstate moped or motorcycle, but I had no idea there were this many!)

https://cybermotorcycle.com/marques/sears-allstate/sears-allstate-troyce.htm

I like this organically styled design!

Amazon essentially had a similar business model as Sears did in their early years, just relevant to the interwebs climate. I believe when Sears built the tower, which ended up with HUGE cost over-run by the time it was finished ......smack in the middle of a recession. That was the real beginning of their decline.

Sears could have done the same thing as Amazon. They had the contacts, they owned all that land, they had huge customer lists. They missed the boat completely.

I reckon Amazon will be usurped in 100 years by some upstart that blows them out of the water.

We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I never had a real pair of jeans (Levis) until high school. From kindergarten through third grade it was Sears Toughskins - I hated those things!

We used to have a Sears in the mall in Auburn, then when it closed, we had a Sears Home Store in Opelika, but it also closed. The only thing I bought at the Sears Home Store, quite a few years ago, was a dual bar bumper for my Craftsman LT2000, it was the very last one they had.

I have a chest freezer, washer/dryer and fridge that are all Kenmores. All work as new.

I have very clear memories of getting on the downtown bus with Mom to make the monthly payments on our Sears appliances. Then we'd go to Woolworth's for hot dogs and we'd split a Coke. Good days were they.

Same! The plastic knee things would get all sweaty or else freezing cold, the edges would scrape your skin. Mom said they were the only thing skinny enough.
