Gas stoves...maybe all done?

I hope not.
Might want to hang onto the old one.

Unsurprisingly, there's a thread on this topic in PARF.

Why PARF and not here (before now)? Because there's no way this isn't political.

stevej37 01-10-2023 07:14 AM

I guess I didn't consider that it was political in that sense.

If it needs to be moved...do it.

It is a hot topic.

ducking.

Quick take: The politicians push the herd away from fuel energy and on to the grid. ...that can be switched on/off remotely with ease.

Let's not call those politicians "control Freaks" ...n'no, Control Enthusiasts!

Remember this when you vote.

It's not just about bombastic new york bred politicians people. There are real life issues at stake.

What about the childhood asthma report?

GH85Carrera 01-10-2023 09:26 AM

So in the near future old gas stoves and ranges will be like the old style gas cans, a collected item. They will be collect because they are useful and rare. Someone offers to buy my old 5 gallon gas can I use for my lawn equipment every time I go to the gas station to refill it. I remember using it when I was a kid at Grandpa's house. My dad used it for years, and now it is mine.

stevej37 01-10-2023 09:29 AM

^^^ Yep....I have 3 of the old style cans and they will most likely outlast me.
The newer ones are trash..

Solved by ventilation. Most homes have a range hood or similar.

Causation vs Correlation aside, this is like saying cars need to be banned because some children injure/die when struck by them. (and there are no safety solutions to mitigate that risk.)

One really has to strain to see DANGER in gas stoves to such a degree that elimination/banishing is the only solution. -As if vent-hoods don't work.

If gas stoves are such a threat then so too are kitchen knives.

Where does the madness stop?

island911 01-10-2023 09:37 AM

Understand that politicians make HUGE money when they take control of any major industry.

They sell "exceptions" to those with deep pockets.

Gavin Nuisance is Pelosi's nephew. - He knows how to milk the system.

stevej37 01-10-2023 09:42 AM

If so...someone should look closer into where the asthma report came from.

island911 01-10-2023 09:46 AM

Let's assume that the report is not just a political fulcrum for a moment.

With massive control over building codes, it is not a reach to require adequate ventilation for every gas-feed appliance.

Commercial installs require that plus massive fire suppression systems.

And if that is not enough, then your backyard barbeque days are over too.

Clearly this whole CA push is for control, not public safety.

But there they are...

Yep, just a political fulcrum.

The real rationale is an excuse to outlaw gas stoves is largely the same as eliminating gas powered lawn equipment. To reduce the use of fossil fuels so the "climate" fanatics will be appeased.

The "study" was simply a look at statistics and appears to have pretty much just compared how many kids with asthma lived in states where gas stoves are used...but didn't compare other potential causes or mitigating factors.

"We found that 12.7% (95% CI = 6.3–19.3%) of current childhood asthma in the US is attributable to gas stove use (Figure 1). At the state level, the proportion of childhood asthma that could be theoretically prevented if gas stove use was not present (e.g., state-specific PAFs) varied. Illinois experiences the highest burden (21.1%), followed by California (20.1%), New York (18.8%), Massachusetts (15.4%), and Pennsylvania (13.5%). Texas, Colorado, and Ohio all experience burdens around 10%. Florida experiences the lowest burden (3%). The state-level PAFs differ due to varying exposure to gas stoves among children. In Illinois, for example, approximately 79.1% of households with children cook with gas, whereas in Florida, the figure is only 9.1%. States with a higher percentage of children living in households with gas stoves have higher proportions of current childhood asthma attributable to gas stove usage."

There are and have been so many gas stoves over the years. I don't think childhood asthma is that prevalent.

This feels like one of those things where they have 20 stoves running in a box and have a monkey breathing only the air out of the box and the monkey gets asthma, so it must come from gas stoves.

Right, with no real cause-->effect proof. Just statistics that may not be related.

Extractor fans (rangehood) should suck the burnt gas fumes out.

Here in NZ we have to have extractor fans over the cooktop.

fintstone 01-10-2023 10:30 AM

Studies like this one are just starting points for real research/testing. They should not be the basis of policy...but often are (if they support a desired policy).
