While at IBM, all the youngins had degrees, but many of the EEs that were older did not. Some of the best in fact. The were tested for apptitude and then had OJT within IBM back in the 70s. I was always leading/bleeding edge in computers and communications tech .... you simply don't even get exposed to that while getting a degree... only in theory. Certainly not at NC State .... and those grads were damn good .... IBM got the cream of the crop from everywhere too.... but the older geezers ruled also.... real world EE. The corps I worked for generally had degree requirements, but proven track records were hired too ... if they wanted you, they found a way to circumvent HR.

But lying on a resume was always verboten... and cause for immediate termination.

If you were applying for an engineering position, you had to meet minimum qualifications to even be considered. Either have an engineering degree or a PE. Most states require an engineering degree to get a PE so most were still excluded. If you applied to an EE position, you were eliminated before the resume was even forwarded to the selection official if you did not meet those requirements (no computer science degree etc. allowed... unless you had taken essentially enough engineering/physics/calculus to have qualified for an engineering degree bit for some reason, opted for a different degree. Of course, the eng. degree only got you in at a very low level (Engineers started at $44,740 in 2022) entry level. To compete for anything more, you had to have significant experience on top of that.

Lying on resumes happened a lot before the internet was widely used. I worked with a guy in the 70's Dr. So and So who came on board at a diagnostics company as an expert in red blood cell active surface sites. Turned out that he lied on the resume, faked a diploma and was finally found out when an associate discovered a ton of plagiarism in one of his white papers. The school he claimed as alma mater never heard of him and a previous employer said "who?". Turns out that HR never vetted him. That's two job openings.

^^^deleted my LinkedIn account 3 weeks ago, after 15 years of essentially nothing coming from it but headhunters wanted my resume for free....

In PARF it is perfectly acceptable. Read the George Santos thread.

Yep. Santos thought he could do a Biden...and the press would also look the other way.

Translation, I changed a light bulb.

That is how you embellish without lying.

I haven't needed a formal resume', well, ever really.

That said, if I'd ever found myself in a desperate unemployment situation and the one shot I had at getting an interview that might lead to me landing the only available job that would allow me to to feed and house my family would have required me to be something less than entirely truthful then, yes, I just might have been.

Lying on a resume' would have, to me anyway, fallen squarely in the I'll-absolutely-do-that-in-order-to-keep my-family-secure category

Not in my field and the positions I held ... the article I read when I started this thread made it sound pretty common these daze tho'.

I suspect your field is similar .... not saying it doesn't happen tho'....

We used to do background checks on all potential hires which, I would hope, would at least vet simple things like lying about graduating from a college you never attended. For me, the resume itself didn't really mean all that much, as after 2-3 interviews you would know whether the person knew their stuff or not. It's more about bringing someone onto the team that is serially dishonest - that's a non-starter for me. I'm talking about egregious falsehoods, obviously everyone embellishes a bit.

KFC911 02-01-2023 01:26 PM

^^^^ All the resume does it get you an interview. And lying about degrees or former jobs was cause for immediate dismissal if discovered.

Embellishment is for BS'ers .... easily spotted too imo .... and that's no BS ;)

Nolan Ryan was my fav pitcher to watch....rear back and throw one 100mph.. fast-ball after another.
The batter would swing after the sound of the pitch in the catchers mitt.

Are we still talking about baseball?....or am I late?

When Nolan was still "wild" ... he was the fourth best pitcher on the Mets :D.

His lose pitching a 2 hitter, striking out 12, and walking 8 :).

No batter dug in against him either....

AND YER LATE :)!
