I can still remember walking to the record store in Athens, OH buying DejaVu and On the Threshold of a Dream. That was a good day.

If you haven’t seen Echo in the Canyon about the early days of the alternative (at that time) LA music scene it is worth a watch. Buffalo Springfield, Joni, CSN, Frank Zappa, Mammas and Pappas great look at that era

And a lot to put up with during his time. I hope he finds peace now. Because if he don't, I sure as hell won't.

JavaBrewer 01-19-2023 03:56 PM

RIP. I know nothing about him as a person but the music left behind, with his collective, lives in me going forward.

Highly recommend watching. My generation is passing on. I'm feeling my age.

Rtrorkt 01-19-2023 04:21 PM

that is a great read. Maybe I will put on CSN, Joni, New Riders, Buffalo Springfield and a bit of the Mammas and Pappas and find the herb

Steve Carlton 01-19-2023 04:26 PM

Echo in the Canyon sounds like a great idea! Time to see it again. I just bought a ticket to see Graham Nash in Berkeley in July and I'm sure he'll tell some stories. I saw him a few months ago and he hasn't lost a step and puts on a great show.

Rot 911 01-19-2023 04:34 PM

Playing some on the turntable right now.

Mr. Crosby was a troubled sailor with a great voice and a lot of luck. His meeting up with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash was a gift to us from the gods.
The first time I heard their "Crosby, Stills, Nash" album my girlfriend and I sat up all night in the attic of a boat house listening to it, smoking some weed, and listening over and over. We watched the sun come up over a little lake in the Adirondacks, in the attic of a boat house, listening to a sailor sing. God speed David.

For the last few decades all I've read from people who knew him was he was a first class A-hole. Now everyone is going to say what a great guy he was.
Musician: A+
Human Being: F

That's pretty much common knowledge, but give the man his due on his dying day.
We can talk about his failings later. Today, we should celebrate his contributions.

serene911 01-19-2023 07:12 PM

In an interview I saw awhile back Crosby himself said, I've been a real A- hole over the years.
He was well aware of his actions and admitted it himself. Can't fault his momentous contributions
to music over the years though.Without him the voice of a generation would not have been the
same.

I'lll celebrate his contributions to music but to me the measure of a man is what he contributed to the class average of humanity.
Tell me how great his musical skills are and I'll agree. Tell me how much the world will miss him and I'll disagree.

craigster59 01-19-2023 08:40 PM

I read his biography when it came out Long Time Gone. He was quite the partier and self proclaimed "A-hole".

He should have hit the exit ramp quite a bit earlier with his lifestyle, surprised he made it this far. RIP Croz, thanks for the tunes.

I have to admit Echo was a bit out of alignment with my expectations and left me wanting more, which led me to this multi-part doc that I think is even better:

...and it's a fair wind
Blowin' warm out of the south over my shoulder,
Guess I'll set a course and go...

Rest In Peace David Crosby

Mike Andrew 01-20-2023 05:46 AM

Driving I-82 back from skiing a few years ago, I caught him on Stern's show. Interview was the entire show and Crosby was more genuine than I expected, having heard what a douche he could be.
Tough 10 days for the musicians of my youth - Beck, Bogert, Bachman.Crosby.
Starting to feel my age and think about the diminishing sand in the top of my hourglass. Better go skiing.

Mike Andrew 01-20-2023 05:47 AM

Correction - I-80.

Old fingers:)

Hear ya, Mike. As I noted earlier, I can still remember the day walking from the dorm in Athens, O and buying Deja Vu and On the Threshold of a Dream. Music was magic then.
