My how thing have changed!

I recently just finished scanning (converting) all of my parents 8mm movies to HD digital files. 34 files, 16.8 GB of new files, all with no sound, as there was not audio available for consumers in 1950s ans 1960s, or even until the 1980s.

One of the reels had this little ad from Kodak about how to add sound to your 8mm movies after the fact. The little flyer has a date on the back side of April 1961. Using an inflation calculator it is the equivalent of $3,425.73 in today's money.

I can't imagine many people paid that much just to hear sound. And it never mentions what having the magnetic stripe added would cost.

Now days, whip out the average cell phone and shoot broadcast quality HD TV in almost any light and get wonderful video with sound. Motion stabilized, and astonishing color clarity, and it does not cost a penny. Then watch them on a 60+ inch TV at home. My how times have changed in 62 years.

It always amazes me that we have surpassed Star-Trek technology with our smart phones.
We have long surpassed what I thought was possible while in school.

I bought a scanner because the local companies would charge twice the price of the scanner..for a single box.
(I have cartons of boxes)

But yet the best outsource would only offer bulk scanning of old photos at 320dpi.
No correction or guarantees.
In this modern world..

And everything personal would be automatically 'uploaded to the cloud' (ie my personal information stolen)

Microsoft can't even guarantee printer or keypad functionality with Win10/11.
Why is my Win11 laptop keypad suddenly broken?
It wasn't even fixed after restart.
Basic things sabotaged.

Troubles we couldn't imagine in the days before the net...yes, things have changed.

I was going to call you an oldster that was behind the times, but you did stick the "+" next to the 60. I consider myself a very late adopter that stays well behind the curve of TV size. Just this past year we upgraded from a 46" to a 65" TV. These days 65" seems "entry level." I know folks that had 80+" screens 5 years ago, and recently heard someone talking about something triple digits.

Costco is pretty affordable to drop off Super 8 movies for transfer. you can't just DIY at home with a cam corder or phone, as the shutter speed synch rates don't match up.

Get the raw data into digital, then comes the hard time consuming part of editing.

I had several hours of films. I checked several sources for conversions. They all wanted a LOT more than my Kodak Scanner gizmo.

We paid $3,000 for our first 1GB hard drive.

It was the size of a cinder block and weighed more.

I remember making the pictures that are hanging over my desk. I felt really proud that I could take a picture and actually print it myself and have it turn out as nice as what I'd expect from a commercial source.
Recently I made a video of our train set using my latest camera. 4k video is better than what I watch on TV. Simply amazing the technology we have at our disposal these days.
