The latest variant of COVID -19

This latest variant was NO FUN!

I contracted it at a company holiday party on the 19th. I'm still feeling like crap. I had 4 days of horrible muscle pain and fatigue so much so it was like climbing K2 to make it the the loo.

I was prescribed molnupiravir antiviral. I do believe it helped.

I don't wish this on anyone.

I'm 67+ I have hade 3 boosters. They say that the vax is not very effective with this variant.

Thanks

Glad you are doing better!

I know a number of people who've gotten Covid recently, all for the first time as far as they know. A mix of older and vulnerable and younger, all vaccinated and mostly with the latest booster. About half of the older ones had a fairly rough time - a week or more of pretty miserable symptoms, lesser if they went on Paxlovid, a little lesser if they went on Molunpiravir. Most of the younger ones had mild symptoms, but some had a rough time too. However, none had "severe" illness, meaning required hospitalization, which is good.

I thought I was gonna die this past Wed, Thurs and Friday. I never had muscle aches and shivering like this. The weakness/fatigue was remarkable. I really don't wish it on anyone.

They put me on Molunpiravir rather than Paxlovid because I take Humira for Crohn's which can lower one's immunity. I thought about not taking my shot the Sun before last since I was feeling lousy but did to stay on schedule. I wonder if it would have made a difference.

Tobra, BTW we are still using that truck you were kind enough to check out.

It isn't an immunity thing.

Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir) is taken with ritonavir to slow the body's clearance of nirmatrelvir, which is the active anti-viral drug, otherwise body would clear the nirmatrelvir too quickly (half life of nirmatrelvir in body, without ritonavir, is pretty short). Ritonavir is used in other combo drugs for the same purpose.

However, ritonavir also slows body's clearance of other medications that people sometimes take, so potentially over the week course of Paxlovid those other medications could potentially build up to too-high levels in the body.

Doctors could instruct patients to interrupt or reduce dosing of those other medications while taking Paxlovid, e.g. take XYZ every n days instead of daily. Since that is complicated, they often prescribe Lagevrio (molnupiravir) instead. The problem is that Lagevrio is not as effective than Paxlovid, by quite a margin. So patients are getting a less-effective antiviral.

Still, much better to take Lagevrio than nothing!

Are the first time I had Covid, it was mild and I wasn’t even sure I had it until I got the test. Since then I’ve had all the shots and boosters. Last month I got covid again and it was like a mild cold but lots of coughing (this was the same time I inhaled a small piece of pizza).

I had coffee with a friend yesterday who later called me to say he has just found out he's got covid. Ummmm.

I immediately ate a whole lot of cloves of garlic and zinc. If it doesn't keep covid away it will sure protect me from evil spirits.

I was like that for 10 days, exactly one year ago. Sweats and chills, full on body aches and pain, no appetite at all. I was 57, vaxed with the first booster.
