Why don't threads linger here longer after moving to PARF?

Just curious .... no complaints. They seem to stay for just a short while .... then,

Poof .... Gone!

edited: Oops .... I meant to post this in OT ;)

Did you mean why isn't there a redirect for long in OT after a thread moves to PARF?

When a thread is moved the moderator can leave no redirect, leave a permanent one, or set the "lifespan" of the redirect from a day to a year. So it depends on the mod. I moved this one from PARF to OT with a redirect that will expire in 24 hours for example. (For science sake).

We don't get to move threads OUT of PARF very often - felt strange. :D

Thanks Chris! That explains it nicely. I normally don't visit PARF except to follow threads that get moved over and usually do so via the redirect.... when it disappears, I often forget about them completely .... CRS :).

No biggie ... I was just curious how it worked.

I hate it when stuff gets moved to PARF.

I have not engaged in a PARF thread in 6+ years but it may not seem that way when I participate in something that was in OT but then gets moved.

You're really just baiting to move this back to PARF aren't you? :D

"Inflation, Buddhists, Prime Ministers, Illuminati! amiright?"

A better question is why do people that do not post in PARF (and are the most critical of PARF), start/make so many political threads/posts (advancing their political position) in OT? Do they believe that only those that disagree with them should be relegated to PARF or are they just not that self-aware?

HA! ^ fint FTW.

What a voice! She is gone but not forgotten. She did not linger nearly long enough.

Edited for clarity.

^^^^ I have no issues with PARF whatsoever fwiw. If I want to discuss politics or religion I know where to find it .... I just don't visit this forum for either one. I've occasionally started threads here in OT that have been moved over that have NEVER espoused a political opinion .... at least I can't recall one, but do get tired of PARF spill-over by a few who do. My apologies to everyone for my threads which have been moved.... PARF just brings out the worst side of Pelican .... same as it's always been :(.

I sure wish you could put moderators on ignore too ;)....

Thanks Chris :)

Wish this one would go back where it belongs too...

cstreit 02-04-2023 12:55 PM

KC unfortunately these threads will get co-opted by politics and then they will be moved into PARF.

What should probably happen is that the PARFy comment be removed so the thread may live on.

KFC911 02-04-2023 01:07 PM

Thanks Chris .... I know where to find PARF ... who doesnt ;)? You and Paul do a fine job imo... and in the "grey zone" .... I do think your idea is better ... whereas some threads just belong there. After PARF was created way back when .... the duality of threads on some topics was allowed .... takes a while to know just "what's what" .... yeah I am guilty too :D.

THanks - I don't moderate in there much to be fair - all credit to Seahawk as I tend to be a little too heavy handed apparently. :D

Touché! Spot on.

fintstone 02-04-2023 01:33 PM

So now we are discussing moderation which is also reportedly taboo here?

What is the complaint about PARF again...and threads being set there (that started here)? You know, it is pretty easy to not start threads here that get sent to PARF. It is even easier to avoid PARF or even bringing it up (or those that post there) in OT.

Reminds me of an old story, A story about Br’er Rabbit

So Br’er Fox had caught Br’er Rabbit and this time Br’er Fox said he was going to cook Br’er Rabbit and eat him up for good! Br’er Rabbit was mighty scared. He begged, “Oh, Br’er Fox, I don’t care what you do with me, so long as you just don’t throw me in that briar patch over there. Go on and barbecue me up, Br’er Fox, but please don’t throw me in that briar patch.”

Br’er Fox said he was going to roast him anyhow, but when he went to hang Br’er Rabbit up over the fire, he found he didn’t have any string to tie him up with. “Well, I guess I can’t roast you,” Br’er Fox said. “I guess I’ll have to drown you instead.” Br’er Rabbit pleaded, “Oh, Br’er Fox, go ahead and drown me then, just so long as you don’t throw me into that briar patch!”

“Well,” said Br’er Fox, “it looks like there’s no water around here to drown you in. I guess I’ll skin you instead.” “Okay, Br’er Fox, no problem,” chattered Br’er Rabbit, “Go ahead and skin me, cut out my eyes, cut off my legs, just don’t throw me into that briar patch!

By this time, Br’er Fox had gotten the idea that Br’er Rabbit really, really didn’t want to get anywhere near that briar patch. Br’er Fox wanted to hurt Br’er Rabbit as bad as he could, so he took Br’er Rabbit by the legs and threw him right smack into the middle of that briar patch. He heard a lot of rustling and crackling when Br’er Rabbit landed, and he waited around to see what terrible thing was going to happen.

But a few minutes later, he hears somebody calling, “Oh, yoo-hoo, Br’er Fox! Over here!” and he looks – and he sees Br’er Rabbit, sitting on a rock, combing the tar out of his fur with a stick. “Didn’t you know, Br’er Fox,” called Br’er Rabbit. “I was bred and born in the briar patch! Bred and born!” And he hopped away.

'Oh please, Mister Moderator, please don't send my thread to PARF!'

There was no complaint. It was a question about expiring redirects which also led to a discussion about why threads get sent there some time.

You seem to have read into this as and taken it personally or are spoiling for a fight.

I was not referring to your post at all. I do not take it personally nor am I spoiling for a fight.

I just noted that an awful lot of OT threads are latently political and/or disparage/call out folks in PARF "by accident" in a forum that excludes discussion of issues related to politics and religion...much less discussed as constantly as it is. The fastest way to ensure a topic is sent to PARF is to start with "Don't PARF this up"...or to start describing PARF or those that post in PARF (appropriately) in a poor light here (as is typical).

This thread addressed PARF and was posted in PARF. That is why I opened it. Then the OP was edited to indicate it should have been in OT. While not quite the direct OT attack as many, the undertone was not complimentary either...and is typical.

Folks that post about PARF in OT simply want to play PARF in OT but have a nanny. It is amusing, as they doth protest PARF a bit too much...when PARF generally ignores them until called upon. It is amusing to talk about amusing, nonpolitical, nonreligious things such as this in OT.

Understood. You gotta have thick skin there some times.. Cheers.

Try using the "ignore function" fint .... after 22 years here I finally did. It works :)
