The original music is so much better than the remix versions.

Bowie was a FAKE...he looked around for years in the 60's trying to find a sound that would make him a STAR>>>finally he hit on Ziggy..

“It’s all pose, it’s all f*cking posing. It’s nothing to do with music. He knows it too. I can’t think of anything else he’s done that would make my hair stand up.”..Keith Richards

Mick Jagger discovered Guy Van Peelart paintings where he showed Bowie. he got ahead of the Stones using one for his Diamond Dogs cover.. so you never showed Bowie anything lest he steal it from you.

Mick Ronson was responsible for a lot of Bowie's early sound, Ronson was considered as a replacement for Mick Taylor when he left the RS...Keith opted for his wana be Keith Ronnie Wood.

I like Aladdin Sane...Panic in Detroit and Gene Genie..

Bowie's first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. The Ziggy Stardust character came out in 1972 and only lasted a year. He adopted many personas since then as part of being an entertainer. I don't think many rock and roll stars adopted personas prior to Bowie.

Disapproval from Keith Richards means nothing to me. Sorry.

Pfffft. Stones are better. Richards is a top five guitarist of all time. Ronson is top fifty.

However, Bowie was confused as to how to get famous so he cranked out one of the most powerful songs of all time in his early 20's. That's pretty impressive.

Ronson helped Bowie come close to the Stones now and then but so much of Bowie is not awesome fuzz guitar riffs.

Good day, Sir.

(I like Panic in Detroit a lot)

Richards is an authentic tell it like it is kind of guy..he doesn't mince words..

So what would you call the persona of the Space Oddity? Back in the day Bowie and Space Oddity/Ziggy were the favs of the Homosexuals...they loved him..

I have always thought that early Bowie had a Dual quality to it...it was way over the line into schizophrenia

I don't doubt Richards doesn't mince words. I don't know much about him to have an opinion, though. Maybe he was upset with the close relationship (probably sexual) Bowie had with Jagger? I don't know. Or care. The original release of "Space Oddity" was in 1969 and was filmed in his short promotional movie Love You Till Tuesday. I don't think the movie was released until 1984. "Space Oddity" starts at about 21:32:

https://www.davidbowienews.com/2016/12/love-you-till-tuesday-short-film-1969/

My take is Bowie tried really hard to be a success in Rock and Roll and found it with his outrageous, androgenous characters. I think he broke ground for many, many other artists to follow in years to come. If he did suffer from schizophrenia, I think he was high functioning. There is history of that disorder in his family, I believe. What makes you think he was "way over the line" in his early career?

On some of our cold mornings (we have plenty) when my 7 yr old wants to go to school
just half dressed I sing "Ground control to major Tom, take your protein pills
and put your mittens on"

She thinks I'm nuts, of course.

He's an interesting character for sure. The video for the tune with Jagger is pretty cringeworthy. I think it's like if we had our worst moments in life memorialised in film.

Bowies good stuff has an atmosphere that is just catchy as heck and unique. Don't tunes like that usually come from a producer? Kinda like how Elton John had nothing to do with the sound on Benny & the Jets. If you gave a random song to people like Bowie or Elton to perform it would probably come out pretty lackluster. But if you gave the same to a group like the Stones it would probably be pretty fun. I guess that's the real difference between these guys and explains comments like Richards.

My journey as a fan began in 1972 as a freshmen in college with Hunky Dory. Then every one afterwards - and even backwards with Space Oddity and The Man who sold the World.

My close handful of friends and I would drive down to the inlet - Bowie blasting - while we took bong hits before hitting the waves.

Also saw Bowie in concert in Miami in the early 90's. Great performance!

So many great songs and albums but if I had to pick a fav. - I think it would be Aladdin Sane. Not just because of the songs, which are fantastic, but because of the timing when it was released - 1973 - and so many great memories.....
