Fellas,
All depends how you come at the hobby-- to each his own. for some its just the garage queen-some like driving em -some see em as investments. If I am afraid to drive it probably I ain't keeping it.. If it appreciated while I own it thats good but not why I own it. Fun in its many forms is why I like cars, I appreciate the different points of view PWD said it --your car your decisions. |

There are as broad a variety of approaches to long hood ownership as there are folks who own them. For some, they are investments. For some, fun driving toys. And everything in-between. There is no "right" or "wrong" or even "indifferent". We all "pays our money and makes our choices". My choices are no better than yours, yours are no better than mine. I do not enjoy my car more than you, nor you more than me, based upon those choices. The one clear thing in all of this is that if you are not enjoying your chosen niche in this great hobby, it might be time to admit that to yourself and get out. No harm no foul, no judgement. I've made my decision. I made it long ago. Mine isn't going anywhere, at any price. One of my kids will inherit it. For now, I'll keep driving it as much as possible. I've personally rolled the odometer over twice in just over 20 years of ownership. It sees a dozen track days every year, gets driven halfway across the country every year, and is driven with a combination of pure joy and reckless abandon. There is literally not a single piece of it that I have not held separately in my own two hands, some of them many, many times. I have been deeply involved in R Gruppe for over 20 years, and have served as our Pac West region "Chaptermeister" for 18 of those years. A couple of years ago I stepped up a bit more, accepting the position of Vice President of the club. After many years in the motorcycle club scene, the car club scene, I truly found my home with my R Gruppe family. My car was the gateway into that family, long before anyone thought these cars were "worth" anything. In it, I am accompanied by like minded enthusiasts who continue to absolutely drive the schitt outa these cars, their "value" be damned. Their "value", to us, is purely that they are the means to the end, the vehicle through which we have found one another. That, to us, is a "value" we cannot measure. In the words of one of our late, great members, we are just going to continue to "drive these pigs!!!" and enjoy them. Everyone else can enjoy them as they like as well. I used to be into low mile, all original (including paint) cars. Had some really mint 80s 911s in the 20k mile range, and a 5k mile Ferrari on 25 year old original tires, for example.
Truthfully, I never really fully enjoyed them. It might not make sense, but I felt responsible for preserving, say, a 6000 mile all original 30 year old “collector” car. Because to me, if it’s damaged, no amount of money can bring it back to what it was. For that reason, in my older years I’ve not bought a single original paint fun car. Or any really low mile ones. And I’ve driven them all. For fun, to the grocery or hardware store, etc. They’ve all been super nice, very clean cars. But just not all original. My enjoyment of cars has been much higher after I broke the garage queen habit. |
They are more fun to drive HARD than to look at.....

I bought my car back in 1995, and it is worth over triple what I paid for it. From the front bumper to the rear bumper, I have touched, and put blood sweat and tears into the maintenance and upgrades to make it the perfect 911. Or certainly my vision of the perfect 911. I have driven it to Key West, northern Maine, Canada, Savannah, GA in August, and this year Palm Springs, CA. It will be the 4th visit to California in that car. I will be really close to 190,000 miles when I return to Oklahoma. My car is to be driven. I will never own a garage queen. Just not my style. I don't understand NOT driving a car to save it for the next owner. It just does not compute in my brain. Porsches are meant to be driven. Replacing it with a market value check would be near impossible. The full Griffith's system AC is what makes the car driveable and comfortable on 100+ degree days. The factory heater is astonishing and keep me warm in zero degree temps. I have driven it multiple times for 12 hour days and 900+ mile trips. What other car on the planet from the 1980s can do that? When I stop anywhere I get compliments on the car. I have won a few car shows and a few on this forum have seen it in person and will tell you it is a nice car. I refuse to stop driving it because it would be impossible to replace. I have not had an accident or a ticket since the 1970s.
