We drove 3 356's with two wives to the 356 west coast holiday in 2021. 1,000 mile round trip. My buddy's accelerator cable broke just outside of Bend. We pulled over, got the car up on some wood we found and he cobbled it back together. He made a bit better fix at the place we stayed using a couple of wire coat hangers. We're driving 914's and a few air cooled 911's to Rennsport this year with a larger group. We insure them for as much as we can and drive them. Even some 914's have gotten quite pricey. My buddy will be driving a factory 6. I'll be driving my Bumblebee. I just moved my collector coverage to State Farm from Hagerty and saved 40% with better coverage.

Many of you remember I had a fairly sweet '72 that I swapped in a 3.2 and then tracked that car quite a bit. It was ridiculously fun.
When my son was 9, he goofing around in the garage with a neighborhood kid and they knocked over a bicycle that brushed the driver's door causing a very small 1.5" tiny, barely visible scratch. He came in right away to let me know. I walked out just knowing it was going to be bad. I could feel myself tingling, and memories of my Dad ripping me as a kid for stupid siht was making it worse. When I saw it was nothing of course I was relieved. Here's the hard part...when I looked at my son he looked terrified. I was crushed. I hugged him, laughed and told him it was nothing and praised him for telling me right away. They left the garage and played outside. I went inside and almost cried seeing him so scared. I listed my car for sale the next week. Then, about 8-9 months later, longhood prices went nuts. Sure, that stung, but...it was just a car to me. Since then, we've gotten into cheap ass Subarus that are awesome and he now has an '02 Toyota Solara that he loves and tweaks. He thanks me all the time for steering him away from car payments. There are endless sweet cars to be had for $10k and less. I'll probably get a 997.2 when I retire next year and have no real desire to own another longhood. But gawd, they are purty. |
^ the way I feel. I'm over it. I used to get attached to cars but I've changed with age. Now, it's just a car. I don't need to own status symbol classic cars anymore. My longhood is going up for sale on a month. I don't need an expensive piece of art decorating my garage and taking up shop space, even though it is a beautiful piece of art. If I feel like zipping around in a sports car I have a WRX with a fresh engine that has way more horsepower and is faster around corners than the 911. It's goofy Jap styling does nothing for me but it won't break my heart or my bank account if I stack it so it's a 100 times more fun to drive because of the freedom. NOTHING drives like a 911 so I'll get another sometime, just not another long hood. I sold a 72 2002 a couple of years ago I was very attached to for many years and actually had none of the sellers remorse that I anticipated. My perspectives have changed I guess.

It'll be listed on BaT in about a month. |

Thanks, it was certainly a life moment for me. Looking back I doubt he even remembers it...just the way I hoped. :) |
Insurance bumped, but I still drive it less..
No insurance will make whole an original car wrecked by an inattentive driver on his phone... Also don't forget, if you want to cash in on BaT, you'll need to give uncle Sam a nice % of the profit (and they only let you deduct restoration costs, NOT maintenance)... Ouch - could easily be $20K nowadays I refuse to let the gov't profit from the one car I did not lose money on ;-) So looks like we're stuck with them, Oh no !!! |
I was working in my garage one day on the 930 and my 2-3 old son was with me. I was trying to focus on the task at hand and when I looked up, he had a hammer and was walking around the car just barely tapping it. No damage done and I still remind him of that with both of us laughing.
