Yikes! MRIs are nothing to screw around with. Very weird. I wonder what sort of gun he had and if it was in a holster or if he was carrying Mexican style.

I’ve worked on MR scanners countless times. How he got through the screening process is a serious breakdown in communication.

Has to be more to the story. Either he lied or the Technologist didn’t make the danger clear enough.

Sites pretty much make people change into scrubs these days. Far too many underwire bras, zippers and other metallic things in clothing today.

Whenever I enter a scan room I look like I’m doing the macarena checking for metal, wallet, dose badge, keys, usb drives, etc.

They asked him if he had anything metal on him and he said, "No."
I've forgotten I had change in my pocket, but I don't think I would forget having a gun on me.

It occurred in Brazil. I'm sure there are places in Brazil that are state of the art and really well run, I suspect that most of the country is a bit more lax than most of the US. Stuff slips through.
Per the article, the tech told him to get rid of any metal and he forgot about his gun. It sounds like it was a gut shot and he survived for about 3 weeks before he succumbed to his wounds.

I'm assuming either it was something like a 1911 with a safety and was cocked and locked. In which case, being forcefully pulled out of where ever it was hidden and then being slammed against the MRI machine, it could have gone off. If it was just stuffed in his pants without a holster, the process of pulling it out of his pants could have caused something to snag the trigger. Or, it was an MRI with enough magnetic force to do all sorts of crazy stuff. Maybe the MRI "pulled the trigger" for him.

Seems it's not that unusual for guns to get yanked from folks by MRIs.

Is the magnet always active or does it get activated when the power is turned on/up? I would’ve thought you turned up the power to make the magnet more powerful. From the videos it seems like it’s always active.

The magnets are always active.
Most are supercooled magnets.
Room safety is always of top concern in our departments.
I can not say the policies in place in Brazil- this is very unlikely to happen in any certified US facitlity.

As above plus some more detail- MRIs have Supercooled electromagnets. Liquid nitrogen etc and high current electical flow, 'quenching' them is done by turning off the current to demagnitize the bore. This is done in an emergency and quickly using the big red button. But restoring fuction is more complicated then turning them back on. Calibration is needed.

They are clickity clackity bang bang fog horn machines that I get to hold the panic button and before we start tell the technician to get me good and lined up broadside to that Japanese destroyer before I push the button and launch out of the tube!

I have a copper crucifix on a lanyard that I wear around my neck. The technician told me probably be ok to take it off my neck and hold it in my hand outside the tube, warning it might get warm in my hand to the point of a friction burn...I thought well that would be pretty freaky huh?....but it didn't happen. He held it up to the edge of the tube beforehand and there was no attraction.

The ones I've been in are constantly "on" and I'm told if they have to shut down it's a $25,000-$30,000 expense and a day to get it back up and running again.

I am not sure of the cost to restore these anymore- old fart out of the field.
They used to take a week or more to re-engage. They have to be refilled with liquid nitrogen, then slowly brought back up to power.
They "usually" but not always turn back on.
The quench is quite a catastrophic event with significant stresses to the electromagnetic coils. As they warm they develop resistance and much of the electric power is converted to heat.
In the US, the rooms have to be designed to safely vent the 2000L or so of Liquid nitrogen.

That's actually mentioned in the video that I posted above.

Per the video, the tech asked the family member to take the oxygen tank and and told the guy "you'll be fine." The tank was sucked in and ruptured and started "leaking liquid oxygen" that was inhaled by the guy that had been wheeling the tank. He died.

The last one at the VA did that.

The previous ones on post didn't even do that. 🤣

Yep, and no matter how old your mother, and how old you are, I think it's still pretty horrible to have a child die before you do.
