Blue Light Glasses for Computer Work/Relief

A question for the group -

My job entails a lot of time spent looking at a computer monitor and laptop. I have heard that glasses (and screens) that block a percentage of blue light can aid in eye strain and/or discomfort.

Does anyone have some experience with blue light glasses and what is a recommended brand? I'm hesitant of the countless brands I've never heard of on Amazon.

Many thanks...

Mods - I posted in wrong forum - can someone move over to OT?

My wife has and it’s helped her. Go see an ophthalmologist.

Something you can try to get a feel for it is adjusting the screen color temperature to make it warmer. There are some apps that will do this naturally depending on the time of day or light levels.

I dislike any color except the normal color. I hear they help though.

Bingo!

Friend of mine in the motion picture industry turned me on to it.

I use Spyder Data Color on my desktop and laptop. Not ony is it excellent and a standard for editing but also for everyday use. I find with all day use my 57 year old eyes are very relaxed and do not strain. Colors are warm and natural. I recalibrate my screens about every 3 months or so for the seasons. Been using it for about 7 years now.

I do have computer glasses for arms length viewing and blue light filtering but I find myself not using them. My regular glasses seem to have better definition.

Yeah it was a gamechanger the first time I used the app years back. Flux, I think? When the sun went down and the screen went to a warm hue it was such a relief for my eyes.

I have the color temperature of my monitors warm, which helps.

I also have shorter prescription glasses and they are coated to reduce the higher frequencies without making much of a color shift.

Changing the monitor at first took some getting used to.
Now, change it back, and it also takes getting used to.

Seems they don't work, or needs more research: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29044670/

That being said, my Mac automatically adjusts the color temp at sunset and then again at sunrise.

I tried a pair with the 'anti fatigue' coating and couldn't tell a lick of difference.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies.

Use dark mode. It's a game changer. Windows has the option for it. The Firefox browser has it too. White text on black background is much easier to read.

BTW, idiots who design webpages that use gray text on white backgrounds should be sent to re-education camps.

Yep, I think most stuff these days has some form of "night mode" built in.

You can tune the amount of warmth. I'm able to tune it until I'm OK with it, but invariably, I end up needing to look at colors in photos or something which requires going back to normal color.

Yep, I used f.lux years ago. You can tune f.lux for times and amount of warming and dimming. I believe the stuff that's built into Apple stuff can also be tuned, times, color, etc....

Interesting. I got a blue blocking coating added to my last couple of pairs of glasses because I work at a monitor for a living. I've never noticed a difference, but I assume it can't/shouldn't hurt.

Exactly.

Yes, I love dark mode. I don't even have it flip based on time of day. I just set things to permanent dark mode. Not only is it easier on the eyes, but I think it saves electricity/battery.

I have "computer" glasses. I think they do have that coating. The bigger deal for me is they will adjust the progressive part of the lens to be specific to your distance to a computer screen so you have a larger area of correction up close. No distance correction. I also use them for any up close sort of work so I don't have to tilt my head so much. It really helps working on the cars.

Deschodt 02-16-2023 01:33 PM

+100% on the above...

My computer glasses have the blue light coating but mostly they are 1/2 the prescription I normally need. I cannot emphasize how much that helped with eye fatigue (or vision deterioration). For computer, car work etc..

When I occasionally/accidentally use my normal (long distance) glasses with a PC, I cannot even stand watching the computer screen - and to think those glasses were my "normal" prescription for decades forcing my eye to work extra hard, unreal. Lesson learned. If you are nearsighted, get computer specific glasses, they let you see perfectly about a meter around you (perfect for screen), in a pinch I drive with them but can't read signs as well.

WiFi, or this laptop screen, makes my vision completely blurry after a couple hours.

Second laptop. Same problem.
It doesn't happen when using other computers.

During Covid with everything being remote, I developed ocular migraines while looking at screens all day. The new glasses, most from Amazon, have been amazing.

KNS 02-16-2023 03:26 PM

Can you anyone give some brand names for the type of computer glasses they find satisfactory? I'd rather not get a no-name off of amazon.

Thanks

Evans, Marv 02-16-2023 03:48 PM

I just went onto Amazon to find some clipons - not knowiing really anything about them. I tried some that I got two pair for about $24 (Fonhcoo Eyewear). I seem to be more relaxed and go to sleep easier after an evening of looking at the screen. I'm sure there are better ones, but these seem to have made a difference.

Not cheap, but they are worth it. I have been wearing the blue light blocking glasses for years. Mine are not prescription, but you can get them in a prescription. These have been the ones that have held up the best.
