This was my childhood, and this is my son... dirtbike related

When we were kids we spent almost every living minute possible on our dirtbikes with friends...

Last night, I dropped my 12 year old son and his bike off over at one of his friend's places and they were planning to ride and sleep in a tent somewhere (his buddy's dad farms 10,000 acres).

About an hour later, he sent me this video... (and I cant seem to embed it).

https://youtube.com/shorts/it2Qz_fdCKs?feature=share

I posted it on youtube this morning and in 1 hour, its had over 1800 views (this has never happened before)...

To embed, at least on a PC/Mac, right click on the video itself, then there should be an option to "copy embed code" or something like that.

I came into this thread thinking I would say "I really wish I could have gotten my kids riding the dirtbike more... ...not I'm not so sure.

Heck of a good jump and nice form he has too.

The hour meter on the bike shows 6 hours of riding between yesterday and today. They rode to a campground and bought icecream… stayed up late and called some of the girls in their class, and another friend joined them today.

The entire thing was completely unplanned and more importantly unparented (as it should be). Unlike when I was a kid, they had cell phones if anything went wrong but for the most time, they were out being 12 year old boys…

Great parenting skills, mom and pop Billy!

I enjoyed a 'free range' childhood getting into all sorts of fun scrapes, mostly underwater

Most of today's kids just don't experience the kind of freedom we enjoyed, I feel quite sorry for them

Nice!

And, what is better (as a parent) is that the jump is mostly “safe.” Notice that max height isn’t much. Landing has descending incline.

Evidence of decision making that is often missing before age 25 or so.

I approve.

That's great!
Unlike the 14 yr old I had a chance to meet at my son's house a couple months ago. He got a nice E-bike for Christmas. I told him to ALWAYS lock it up, even for just a minute, or it would grow legs and be taken.
Fast forward to yesterday, I asked how the E-bike was working out. He told me it was stolen two days ago by a homeless guy. I asked him was it locked. No, the lock wasn't really working right and he didn't think anyone would take it while he was at the gym.
Now he gets to work all summer to pay for another one if he wants it, no more freebies from his mom for him.

Reminds me of my first Schwinn Stingray. We lived on an acre with the house on the back third. I left it in the front yard one night and somebody stole it. I had a paper route and earned the money and bought a new 69 Stingray for about $60. I learned my lesson and still have it.
