Buying a used car from a dealer…

Ms Rocket is thinking of moving up to a newer Tahoe. Her current Tahoe is a 2010 LTZ 2WD with about 250K on the clock. We bought it about two years ago with 180K. She drives a lot.

We are looking at a 2016 LTZ 2WD with about 71K and the selling price is $34,790.

According to Carfax, for what it’s worth, it’s had two minor accidents.

https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=CUL_1&vin=1GNSCCKCXGR307262&compCode=prZ8jwfE%2BGzmitpW40qWHwK1MIuQNa5C

Since everybody hates dealing with the BS at car dealers, what’s the best approach and what do you think a fair price is? We will be paying cash.

Edit: From the website, “Price is based on financing being arranged through dealer, otherwise price may be $750 higher, call dealer for details”.

https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/1GNSCCKCXGR307262

From Edmunds.

Seems way high. KBB has it under 34 from a dealer without any BS about captive we **** you in the ass on the rate financing.

I don’t know the market at all but man that sounds very spendy for a Chevy SUV with 71k miles rolled up. Consider the PO likely got low $20s on it as a trade in, miles are too high for a lease return. If the wife is set on that year and model what does the private party market look like. Finally a deal is a deal and I would tell the dealer to eat that $750 after you negotiated the final price…leave your cash buy out of that process.FWIW good luck regardless.

It’s listed at $34,613 on KBB.

If did they play hardball with the extra financing, we could finance it with 50% down, then pay it off in a few months….Whatever the amount is, without an early payoff penalty.

Using the VIN on KBB gives $35,xxx to $38,xxx.

She likes that body style and it’s the second year of production. I’m sure the 2015 would be less but I don’t like first year production.

That was my thought, negotiate the deal and tell them to take a hike about the $750.
Trade in is $32 and private party is $34. If it doesn’t work out, there always be another one down the road.

71K on that truck is nothing.

I've owned 3.

Do routine maintenance and they will easily run for 200k.

They hold resale value very well and an LTZ is a fully loaded truck. Leather, dual zone AC, heated and cooled seats, damn things even got a heated steering wheel.

They actually get decent mileage. I go on runs up to the kids college fully loaded and can get 19-20 mpg at an average speed of 80mph which means you are hitting 100 at times and the thing is rock solid steady.

New that was an ~$85k vehicle not your base model $50k SUV.

It's an awesome SUV. Best Tahoe we've owned so far and I liked the previous two.

I prefer that body style to the current.

The only complaint I have with our current 2016 is it has the auto folding running boards.

If the truck gets dirty they get flaky. They'll start to fold down then fold back up. Feels like a dirty optical interference sensor.

There is no way to lock them in place without disabling the motor and my wife has not *****ed about it enough to motivate me to deal with it.

They've been flaky from day 1 new from the dealer.

EDIT: Just saw the pics, the white one? Pretty truck. Doesn't have the auto fold running boards.

Those trucks have a very cool hand spoon hidey hole behind the display.

Don't mention paying cash. Dealers make a lot of money from all the incidentals and the financing.
Make your deal than tell them you're paying cash. If they don't like it, walk.

Or, finance without prepayment penalties and pay it off before the first payment.

2nd option is better. Dealers do rely on those incentives and they will more often than not not honor the cash price when you decline the financing.

They'll probably tell you to walk before you get a chance to.

I agree. They make some money on the sale of the truck but probably make more money financing it.

She always drives a white truck with tan interior, so that thins the selection. My trucks are the same. Plus we’d like to see it, so it has be within driving range.

If it were me I would walk into the dealership and drive the vehicle to make sure it is what you think it is . If everything is good tell the salesperson you are making a one time offer . No backroom dance no checking with my manager . Make an offer of 32K . Walk if they refuse . That's how you avoid all the BS . GM made more than that one .

This!

Never mention up front the cash payment. Some places insist on a loan. Read the paperwork and see if there is a penalty for early payment. Pay it off in a month or two. Done.

The white one is pretty.

Also has a better wheel package so may have a couple other bells and whistles the other two don't.

Although there's not much to be left on the table with an LZT.

We tend to buy a new car every other year or so. I always ask them if they will give me a better deal if I finance through them. And they say yes, every time. So I finance through them and when the payment info comes in the mail. I just pay the car off. I’ve yet to see any contract that has a pre-payment penalty.

My son walked from a dealership just last week. He had pre-approved financing from his CU. The dealership required him to finance through them - or they wouldn't sell him the truck, so he walked.

I would hope those pictures were taken before any detailing work was done. Fairly good amount of dirt and such showing in those pictures. Looks like damage to the drivers side rear bumper as well.

1 owner, no accident, brand new tires. More miles but is cheaper - $33k.
You can probably ship to your local carmax for $199.
