My Cayenne hit in parking lot

I ran to Walmart at lunch to buy a bag of dogfood. When I came out parking lot cart boy came over and pointed out a red beat up pick up truck that had hit me pulling in then ended up parking in a different spot. I waited a bit for him to come out. Parking lot cart boy came back out and told me manager said I should call police.

Called them and a bit later guy comes walking out and starts to get in his truck. I yelled out to him that I know he is the one who hit my Cayenne. Hit made up an excuse saying he had pulled in and was too close so he backed into another spot. He claimed he did not realize he hit me. I told him too bad as if he had waited for me I likely would have just asked for a bit of cash and call it good. But now cops are pulling in. Cop took our info and is filing report.

This is my old '08 daily driver Cayenne with 240k on the clock and I can likely buff most of it out including sanding buffing the tail light but will be interesting to see what my estimate ends up at. A few small places the paint is rubbed off to the plastic. I have never been in this situation but am hoping his insurance just writes me a check for estimates I will get from some local body shops.

I felt bad for the young punk, but he was obviously lying as his truck also had some decent fresh scrapes on his bed. He told the cop he heard something but did not feel anything so he assumed he did not hit me.

I have always done my own paint and body work so I have no idea what kind of money will be involved.

Generally you don't need to obtain estimates. Adjusters have the same software and if you approve the amount, the money is yours to use as you please. If you don't accept the amount, you will need good reason. So if 3 out 3 shops estimate higher, you probably get more money.

I know this thread will grow legs so I'll just step aside. This is how it has worked for me.

My 10 GTS was recently backed into hard enough to crack the front bumper cover and light. Parked on the street. At body shop now getting new cover, etc. and Carrera horns swapped in so it has real horns for iphone readers at stoplights.

Geico quoted $1800 but only pays $41/hr if you take it your own shop. I gave it to a Porsche certified shop at $52 and while they say I should get Geico to cover the difference, it's short money for piece of mind that it's done right.

Sorry your Cayenne was hit but at least it's not major damage . My guess that's a 1200 dollar repair . Good luck

Did you get the police report? There’s a reason I’m asking. My sons car was backed into while he was in it. Girl ran over apologizing up and down. Police came out but report did not indicate blame and she was not given a citation even though she admitted fault…it was also on private property. Apparently her dad is a cop in Indiana and it seems he advised her to avoid responsibility. Nice.

We filed a claim with her insurance company (Allstate). They called and mailed her over 2 months to get her statement with no response. Essentially she ignored them completely until they declined the claim since no citation was issued. The only option is court which neither of us have time for.

Hopefully the cop documented the blame in your case and you’ll have better luck.

One of my favorite lines from any movie, the Hustler:

Bert: You got talent.

Eddie: So I got talent? So what beat me?

Bert: Character.

The guy who hit you has none.

You have USAA, Tim, from your time in the military?

Be sure to get an estimate from a shop that is either Porsche certified or repairs them on an on-going basis, my guess is at least $4k...

Yep I can sand then buff taillight. I can likely buff paint then a couple dabs of touchup and it would be good enough on this old daily driver.

Had punk waited for me to come out of store and owned up, I likely would have asked for a little cash and called it good.... But was a punk and I can't stand punks.

When I dropped off my truck I asked how much to paint the entire thing if I pulled door glass which is pretty easy. They said about $8K. No bodywork needed but truck is getting tired looking and only just hit 150K miles so might be a good way to get a new Cayenne on the cheap.

People who hit and run other people’s vehicles deserve whatever comes to them, including financial and/or insurance consequences.

Over the 26 years I owned my 1974 914 2.0 all four fenders were flattened and damaged. I never was in the car when it happened. It happened on four different parts of town, all when the car was legally parked. I never got as much as a note saying everyone thinks I am leaving my contact info, but screw you.

It was usually $250 to $300 bucks for me to get it fixed. My deductible was 250 at the time. All of that was in the 1980s and early 1990s.

My El Camino had someone badly dent in the tailgate while parked in a "good" spot out away from everyone when Parked at Lowes. There was no on in the area when I parked there, and no one when I came out. No note, just a dent and the bank of Glen to fix it.

This is truly my beater car. It is well over 200k and looks dated.
I would have been more concerned upset had it been my wife's 2013 Cayenne which has half the miles and still looks great. I will likely keep driving this '08 until something major happens. It does not owe me anything and it is comfortable to daily drive.

200K is an almost new vehicle!

I just rolled 379,000 miles on my El Camino. It is almost broken in now.

Wow, looking at the photo again, he came thisclose to missing you. Just barely brushed past. Maybe he did think that he missed you but he should have checked. I assume this was the RH rear side of his truck that scraped you. Maybe just take some polish to it and call it a day.

In Ontario parking lots are a private matter and police can't do anything.
My Turbo got hit and someone wrote down the license plate number.
I called the cops and the one that came had the same thing happen to his car and he was still pissed about it. He got ahold of her and scared her saying it was a hit and run and here is the guys number.
She phoned me and then wrote me a cheque for the estimate I had.
I got lucky as she could have told me to pound .... cake.

Cleeeearly your truck is damaged beyond repair.
Imma hook you up and rid you of that burden, yo. How’s about $900….caysh.

Btw, that red truck is much newer than I imagined, but it has substantial rot. And prolly zero insurance at all.
