Insane dealer mark-up

We went to buy my wife a new Ford Maverick base model yesterday. The sticker was 22K. They wanted 10K mark up over sticker! How can they get almost a 50% mark-up on a 22K truck.
It was a horrible experience with everyone from the sales guy to sale manager pressuring us to make a counter offer on paper. I told them we are so far apart that it's not worth either of our time. They followed out the door.
God no wonder people hate car dealerships

Dealers are pretty bad.... Try ordering a vehicle from them. They will flat out refuse.

I think gm is worse with the hidden teer system of pricing. I know a gal that ordered new equinox and it was still 32k after family employee pricing...
They even tried to sell the car from under her when it arrived. 🤣

Local Land Rover dealer is looking for $75k over sticker for the new Sport. Guess there is a lot of silly money out there

I lucked out with my Civic SI. I put a deposit down on it and they signed it at msrp.

Now, I hear on the Civic Forum of nobody getting one close to msrp....most at $5K over.

A good way to lose business. Wife was interested in a Hyundai Palisade last year. Dealership wanted $8k over MSRP...no discussion. We bought her a Honda Odyssey at MSRP. Will never set foot in a Hyundai dealership again. My business is gone forever.

A great reason to NOT buy a new car. Eff that. No way no how. I can almost understand on things like the NSX or one of the Porsche GT_RS cars or something, but an ordinary vehicle, no farkin' way.

I think they did you a favor. Honda > Hyundai all day.

I didn't feel sorry for the stealers when they had nothing to sell during the "pandemic" and were starving. Now it appears they're trying to make up for lost wages

As mentioned on the video - $60,000 for a 2023 base model two wheel drive Ford F-150.

That is INSANE. Who is paying that?

We did the same or nearly so. Walked out of a Kia dealer without even sitting in the Telluride we came to look at and bought a Pilot across the street instead.

Another one here. My wife liked the Palisade but the dealership was of the old school liner/closer type. That along with a five-grand ADM was more than enough for us.

Next up, thank you very much.

I figured she'd want to drive straight to the Lexus dealership for another RX, but that's not what happened.

I still don't know exactly what possessed her to look, but we ended up with a two year old, 15K mile top-of-the-line Honda Ridgeline that she absolutely loves.

Maybe we actually owe that Hyundai dealership a debt of gratitude.

THere are so many 1-2 year old cars out there, many still under warranty. I just have never seen the reason behind paying the difference between a 20% depreciated car vs. the new cost plus dealer fees. A $30k car at a dealer will cost you $35k. It will cost you $25k at 1 year old.

$10k buys a lot of service and detail jobs with most of it left over.

So I hate car dealers just like everyone. I do two things about it:

1. I buy from owners not dealers
2. I own stock in a dealership that has been very lucrative

End of day? I can still hate them. And, my finances are not negatively impacted. It’s a win-win for me, except I don’t own new cars.

No one can afford that. Throw in 8% car loans.

My 18' cummins was 42ish thousand out the door. 2023's are 60k to the dealer. No one can afford that. Wages haven't gone up. Good paying jobs are culled.

It's the perfect storm.

When I was looking for a new Honda Civic...the one year old used ones were the same price as what I paid for a new one.

I have never bought, as an adult, a used truck. SUV or car, absolutely. I hope that my current truck, a 2014 Tundra bought in late 2014, is my last 1/2 ton truck. $60k plus for a 1/2 ton is just too stupid for words.

I bought my Land Cruiser from a friend of mine to take local miles from the Tundra. So far, so good.

Cdnone1, a 50% mark up is just so odd I can't wrap my cheap a$$ around it. I say that because I want a Maverick hybrid or the gas version when we move to South Carolina...a friend of mine has one and it seems to be what I need.

They have a seat lowering kit for chuckle-heads like me. I like small trucks and hope they get the price sorted in the next few years.

I had to check the date on this thread, I thought for sure it would be a bump of a 6-12 month old thread.

Surprised the markups are still going on.

Give it 6 months and look again.

I knew a guy who had to have a new PT cruiser
when they first came out.
He paid $6k over sticker and waited two months
to be the first on his block.
A year or two later the dealers couldn't give them away.

Moral of the story:
if a vehicle is so hot the dealers ask more than sticker,
it's not a vehicle. It's a fad.
If you really want one, wait a year and get it for a decent price.
Or shop around and buy one online and skip the whole dealer thing,
of which ford is the absolutely WORST IMO!
