2023 Prius Prime

Last I heard (yesterday) there’s a 2 YEAR wait. That’s because I want one…

Imbeleviable!

I’m not surprised. It looks like it’s going to be an amazing car.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that Toyota is planning producing a relatively (for Toyota) small number of them because they don’t anticipate huge demand for it.

That struck me as really odd. From what I’ve read and seen about the car, it seems like they couldn’t produce too many if they tried. They’ll sell them all.

If the spec. numbers from Toyota are anywhere near accurate, the Prime will once again blow the competition out of the water. Supposedly, orders are are coming in at $5k over MSRP with no estimated arrival date. Prime chat rooms are saying there are 36 or so in country right now.

Dealers all across the county are saying they have one of two awaiting build dates.

The car itself seems amazing, but the low MSRP seems unreal. That’s a lot of car for the money.

They are not currently eligible for ANY federal EV incentives being 100% Japanese build and parts. With that in mind, the MSRP’s are purely projections. Toyota is mum.

Great marketing from Toyota once again.

The way to go is to buy used 2-3 years down the road. Even then, who knows what the market will be. A good strategy might be to lease with a guaranteed buy-back price, if possible.

Can’t beat ownership cost, especially if you have a short commute. Biggest draw-back, IMO, is the slow recharge rate on 110 volts plug-in. Apparently you can do 110 or 220v. Also under wraps is the possibly available 110 outlet to use the car as a battery source (1500 watts) and/or small (3.3-6.6kw) generator.

I did a brief image search and it showed 3-4 unique and different exterior body styles for the same small hatchback.

Looks like Toyota is betting on it's popularity (rightfully so) and expanding their market beyond grey hairs.

The map, dash, interior of some previous models were completely dysfunctional: ie. the paper map pocket was half sized and the dash designed around a race car manual speed-shifter, no place for glasses and CDs, etc. I hope this comes with logical improvements. Sit in it and see if it functions for tossing your daily crap.

Really?

I see only one body style for the Prius Prime (PHEV) with three package levels, John. The interior supposedly is cheapy-looking plastic but I felt the same way about my FJ Cruiser which turned out to be pretty much indestructible. I’ve hauled at least a dozen 8’ toobafores inside it!

Prius has 60-40 split rear fold-down seat so it has good potential for carrying stuff.

Just kidding. It looks great and has much better power. They should have re-named it, though.

The first Prius came out 20 years ago and dominated hybrid cars up until very recently when everybody else caught on. Toyota is remarketing the Prius name and, if the hype is even close to reality, will dominate for another 20 years.

Changing the Toyota Prius name would be like changing the Ford F-150 name or Coke to ‘New Coke.’

A marketing disaster.

I used an image search using Quant. Too lazy to zoom in, select, copy, create new, paste, save in same, (IrfanView wont let me save to same folder and instead buries it deep within WinUsers%20 crap), back to PP, upload multi images. This is what I saw. All labeled 2023 Prius. At least 3 different styles.

Some of those are 2022 and some are prototype and concept images.

Plus, the official Toyota sites are the ones I’m going by.

Aesthetically, it looks like just another rolling jelly bean to me.

Hey the first hybrid was the Porsche Mixte. Circa 1900ish. Then Tiger tanks WW2. Then M1A1 Abrahams. Nothing new.
Don't confuse consumers with producers.
They like to appropriate good things....and call it their own...but it's not.
And engineering never will be.

The Atkinson cycle engine from 1887 is efficient https://auto.howstuffworks.com/atkinson-cycle-engine.htm
Electric motors supply torque at low rpm.
Together it makes for less gas and more power.
Good for highway and rock crawling. And not running out of gas in the desert.

The Prius has a small footprint and bigger payload than some mega trucks these days.
Scale it up to mega size.

It's too bad Toyota is a leading participant in the Auto Alliance: Anti-mechanic and Pro-surveillance.
