Bench flush an auto tranny?

Picked up a ford 4r70w 4 spd auto tranny to eventually install in a 65 mustang.
Tranny sat outside a couple weeks before I got it.
Draining the fluid revealed some water had gotten inside it.
Since this tranny will be shelved for a bit, curious what I should do to pickle it.

I have a pump i can hook up to the cooling ports.
What to pump through it?
Read diesel, kerosene, acetone, etc.
Was thinking acetone then fill with auto fluid?

Not sure how to shift gears during the flush.
Will that matter?

Tranny came from running 160k mile car.
Rebuild or roll the dice?

Flush with alcohol to absorb the water? Then fill with auto trans fluid? Just a thought...

Then you have Alcohol in your atf.


I don't think solvents are the answer. Evaporation or capture are best methods. Dry some rice in the oven and fill your pan. Turn it into a dissicator

I'd take the pan off and clean it out. Drain the torque converter, Then pump some ATF through it.

Use the correct atf. Who knows what the other stuff will do you your seals and leave behind in the valve body?

Do you know the history of the tranny? 160k miles is getting up there and could be hard miles. I would opt to rebuild it, due to the mileage and water intrusion.

Use fresh ATF for your application as is extremely high in detergents.............
