Would you get mad if your neighbor did this?

I’ve had a surprising (to me) amount of disagreement on this.

It’s on these exact facts (because of course if you start changing the scenario, you can get into grey areas).

Trash/recycling day.

The recycling pickup is down the street coming towards your house.

Your neighbor’s bin is full, so he puts a bag into your half empty bin.

A couple minutes later it is picked up.

Right? Wrong? Are you mad at him for doing that?

rwest 03-17-2023 06:58 PM

No, that wouldn’t make me mad, would be nice if they asked first though.

unclebilly 03-17-2023 06:59 PM

Who cares?

Life is too short to worry about a neighbour using empty capacity in your garbage can that you weren’t using…

City people problems…

look 171 03-17-2023 07:01 PM

City law. Once cans are out on the street, it becomes city property so neighbor can help you fill it to the max and keep it real dirty too but no one really knows this so it isn't normally done.

Now if they put dog siht in there in my can on or before the day(s) or city pick up then I would say something. dog siht stinks like hell in the socal summer heat

How long have these parties been retired and on self-assigned neighborhood watch?

herr_oberst 03-17-2023 07:04 PM

Naw. I like most of my neighbors; we get along.

70SATMan 03-17-2023 07:30 PM

My neighbor across the street and I have an understanding. Both free to add to each others cans if needed and the capacity is there. We also will move each others cans back on to each others properties when the mood strikes us.

It’s what good neighbors do.

stomachmonkey 03-17-2023 07:47 PM

It would upset me so little I'd not even waste time thinking about it much less looking for opinions.

Not sure who is who in this scenario but the upset party needs to get a life.

Noah930 03-17-2023 07:52 PM

No big deal. But then again, I get along with my neighbors.

fanaudical 03-17-2023 07:59 PM

Not in the least. Like 70SATMan, my neighbors and I have an understanding. We watch out for each others' property, put the dogs back in the back yard if they get out, yell at each other's kids for doing stupid things, and throw a bag in the other's trash if ours is full.

Pazuzu 03-17-2023 08:02 PM

I'd be angry!

Bags don't go in the recycling bin.

Pazuzu 03-17-2023 08:03 PM

Also, the neighbor should be angry.

WHY is your recycling bin only half full? Do you hate the Earth? Don't tell me that you can only find a half bin of stuff to recycle, try harder!

:D

Depends on the bag, paper shopping bags and similar are just fine.

My snarky comment doesn't deserve that much work to prove me wrong! :p

Is the paper bag full of snark? If so, not recyclable, snark is a one time use only product.

Well I didn't want anyone to feel guilt for recycling recyclable bags.

In case you haven't noticed, we are not the brightest bunch.

If any of us were really that smart 90% of OT threads wouldn't be us asking each other for advice.:D

LWJ 03-17-2023 08:18 PM

Not angry at all. Unless that moron Eric did it. Then I’m pissed.

Hey, hey, whoa ther...SQUIRREL!

But total cereal, if the custodian of the can that's half full gets pissed, they could benefit from some "perspective education". Cuz they don't own it. They use it.

I mean, really?

Bill Douglas 03-17-2023 10:36 PM

You should meet Aaron Tate, a neighbour of mine. A big angry Maori guy has been giving my GF hell for two years, and tries (words like "My cousins is in the gangs and theys gunna get you") to give me grief.

You are getting off lightly if recycling bins are your only issue.

I am. I’m the scofflaw who put the recycling in my neighbor’s bin.

I was very surprised by her reaction. We’d been very neighborly for years, always saying hello, picking up each others mail, etc. No problems whatsoever.

She made the effort to come over to my house hours later, knock on my door, and complain about it. It was weird, she was so indignant, it was Ike I’d keyed her car. I didn’t know what to say, after looking around for the hidden camera I just apologized and left it at that.

Afterwards I figured she was having a bad day, and just let it go. It didn’t change our relationship at all, we were still just as friendly after that (they subsequently moved).

It wouldn’t bother me at all if my neighbor did that with my bin. As far as asking in advance, I guess that’s possible, but I’d rather they just do it without bothering me, also I’d like to think given our relationships they would assume it’s ok, and it’s unrealistic to ask in advance when the truck is 3 houses away.

stevej37 03-18-2023 01:54 AM

As long as you aren't getting charged extra for it....why not?

Living in a rural area...we have no recyclable pickup. Just the main garbage truck.
