How much cash is under yer mattress?
The thread about online banking got me thinking .... I don't "chase yields" for a bit of "pocket change" that I keep "under my mattress". Without prying .... I'm just curious what others do.... so I'm prying

I found 50 cents down the back of the couch. Other than that, nothing.

I would think if one had not prepared for such an event, 10 years of basic expenses. BASIC = food + fuel + shelter would work. Why 10 years? Because nobody knows what inflation will do and you’re not stuffing the mattress just for yourself. It would be mighty difficult to tell your kids or grandkids to pound sand when they’re freezing and starving.
That 10 years of cash might keep a small clan alive for maybe a year or two then switch to whatever gold/silver one has because in a collapse of the banks, you can bet that eventually a dollar = 0. |

If it were more than just a local situation (girlfriend's husband is looking to mess you up), most likely, everything would cost a lot more. That said, I think if you need much more than a grand or two, paper money is just not going to be worth much. So more than that is probably just extra weight if you have to bug out. If local, once out of the area, one should be able to access assets.
If one is older (less mobile) and owns their own rural property, keeping a pretty good stock of food/water and a way to defend it might be the best answer unless it is a protracted situation. A lot of canned food has several years before expiration if you shop carefully...and rotate your stock. One could wait out most things outside of a complete societal upheaval/government shutdown.

Have enough ammunition and everything else necessary for living can be obtained.
But I’m an anomaly. I always without exception carry enough cash that if I lose my wallet I can get home. |

![]() I go about day-to-day with just a coupla $20s on me ..... I LIVE via my debit card (and getting cash back with a purchase is how I keep those bills in my pocket too) .... I'd have to hitch-hike home to get cash ![]() My thread .... my premises.... the shtf and you've got to git ..... no access to your accounts .... ANYTIME soon. Ammo is too bulky .... 'bout as worthless as silver .... Hoarded ammo will be left behind.... I'd grab a rifle and a pistol and a couple of boxes of ammo for each..... and cash & gold. "Enough" is the best answer so far... Or do you have to steal that .50 from Bill and risk being shot at ![]() Do ya'll keep a cash reserve on hand? |

In that scenario, a Rolex for trade would be a good thing.

A stash of whiskey in pints would probably be a better solution to barter than a rolex or even cash.
"I'll trade you this rolex for that bottle of water (can of beans, gallon of gas, box of 00 buck)" What do you do when you're out of rolexes?

I have a "small chunk of cash" on hand in cash in case of a long power outage and no ATM or credit card purchases possible. In any zombie apocalypse or end of days movie plot type of situation, cash is going to be useless if the government is not around to run the banking system and protect the citizens.
As a life long coin collector I have a decent stash of silver coins, but those are only useful if I can retain them, and deal with relatively honest people. I honesty do not worry about the science fiction writer favorite subject of the after the apocalypse situations. I just don't accept that it is possible, shy of an large asteroid strike in the USA, Yellowstone caldera super volcano, or extraterrestrials attacking. All of those have a likelihood of billions to one against it happening in my lifetime. After that, not my problem. Zombies are just as likely as vampire hordes attacking while riding unicorns using magical weapons.

You forgot to add "What's your address?"

In light of the behavior we are seeing from trash in our cities I suspect cash will be all but worthless in the event of massive bank failure.

My Grandmother who was born in Greece immigrated to the USA around 1906. When she died, she had money under her mattress in the form of silver dollars and certificates.
I heard a story a very longtime ago that 1/3 of the world's gold was buried in the back yards of Europe. Because countries, governments were unstable and currency was suspect, gold and silver was the choice of value. And you could take it anywhere. I like to think my grandmother saw this and decided to the same.

I can't even imagine what the country would be like if i needed to use my silver stash instead of greenbacks. I don't ever want to know.
