I would do an even up swap for that for my 85 911 right now!

I suspect the first two years of maintenance on the GT3 would cost more than I spent on my 911 in the last 5 or 10 years for maintenance items. And a new set of tires would be staggering. Much less the brake pads.

On second thought, I will just keep my 38 year old 188,000 mile 911 and keep doing my own maintenance. I will roll 190,000 before the summer is over.

I bet very few if any owners of new 911s do their own maintenance personally.

That's what I like about the older 911's. The tires alone on a new one would kill me.

You're old 3.2L is fantastic. I had an '88 911, so in most ways, the same car, but with a few upgrades (G-50, new HVAC vents, etc...) from your car, and I loved it. In some ways, my boxster can't touch the old 911 (bottom hinged pedals, hvac controls, gauges/dash, etc... (and that's not even touching on the iconic looks of the old G-bodies). I think I could do a lot of maintenance on the boxster, although anything engine related would be a huge pain, even compared to the old 911. Costs are probably a bit higher too.

But! If I had the money, I could see myself having a GT4 or Cayman GTS with the 4.0L or a GT3 of some flavor. I suspect they are amazing cars.

I suspect that's always been true. Porsches have always been expensive cars, and many/most folks that can afford a new one (at any time) probably value their time enough to pay folks to do the maintenance. And maybe back in the day that was less so, but NOT EVERYONE in the 50s, 60s, and 70s worked on their own cars. I've heard of plenty of older guys that had to teach themselves (or just don't know/do) because their dad's didn't do auto maintenance.

Yea, I first found Pelican while looking for some how to help on some project for my 911.

Then I was reading about "regular guys" that were dentists, CPAs, and not professional mechanics at all doing amazing projects.

Because of Pelican I did a full Griffith's AC upgrade and now have AC that will keep me cold in 100+ degree heat all day. Then I saw the suspension work, and said I can do that.

I will never forget that gut punch I felt when I walked out into my garage and saw my beloved 911 on four jacks stands, with no suspension and thinking to myself, Glen, WFT have you done! It all went back on and is better than before.

Then the scissor lift in a pit idea came from Garage Journal and Pelican. That is a wonderful thing to have. I have several projects to do this summer on my 911.
