Have I gone too far?
don't feel like it. I have one, single neighbor within a stones throw from me and we have an up & down relationship to be sure. There are 7 households within our group and this guy is universally hated. files restraining orders against other neighbors for BS stuff, never says thanks when i plow the snow from our common drive up to the main road. I do the plowing for me, but if a neighbor did something like that for me regularly i would at least drop a text saying thanks. he does not. calls me the "plow fairy" from time to time with a dumb ass look on his face....
so, he will often leave exterior lights on including bright ass porch and side yard beacons or the string lighting (bulb xmas type all in white) on his facia and gable roof ends. very bright so even with my shades drawn i can do shadow hand puppets all night. Spoken with him a number of times about it and for the most part he is doing it less recently after not doing it for the 1st 2.5 years ive been here at all. last night was the last straw keeping my guests up with his lights on all night. my FY has been in the works for months and ive let it slide again and again since i outfitted my plan. so today I did this, pointing it right toward his master bedroom so he can do some hand puppet stuff. hope he knows the bunny one... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1682303496.jpg |

Did he get a warning? Sure, you've spoken to him. But did you make sure he knows how you feel? Or are you talking with action instead of words?
If I did something like what you did, it would come as no surprise. |
Anyone have the paint code for baby poo yellow handy?

Blackout drapes...

Neighbor might be nuts, T, so best be careful with him. Also, I don’t believe you’re a fairy.

Sorry it's come to this.
...on a separate and unrelated note - lasers are on sale. |
Lights are how it starts, toilet seats hanging from trees is how it ends.

warning? I stated I've talked to him about it a number of times and how it is a burden for me. if i went up to talk to him about it would you not expect him to recognize it was something important to me. a pain in my ass? was i gunna tell him i was going to set up a construction barricade light to burden him some? not even, that seems threatening. remember i said he has filed restraining orders against other neighbors? at least 3 of the other 7 neighbors that could be affected by my flashing yellow light ive reached out to about my plan and they've said FTG, do it. ive had the beacon light for 6 months and the 2 6V batteries for 4 months w/o implementing them. the guy he filed against that had to give up all his spoons until the restraining order case had been heard bought me the two 6V batteries. |

Go to a place that sells LEXAN and ask if you can look through their scrap bin. Find a piece of 1/4" - 3/8" clear LEXAN that you can use to protect the lens of that barricade light in case he decides to use it for target practice with an air rifle.

Hatfield-McCoy feud

As a backyard astronomer I am particularly annoyed by such lighting. Rock on Juan but watch your 6.
|
And people wonder why we live in the sticks .....
|
Got a couple of old strobe lights laying around to place on the property line pointing his way? My neighbor is 700 feet away through thick trees and complains my shop stereo is too loud.
Every village needs an idiot. |
The neighbor has good reason to take action against you for that light. And he has legal precedent on his side. Don't escalate. Bad plan. OTOH, you could have gotten an order for him to not direct any lights into your windows.
|
Good luck in your efforts to retrain an *******.

My village has too many :(. I haven't spoken to my neighbor two doors down, about it yet..... he seems like a nice guy .... city fellow from NJ. Has his shed lit up like a billboard all night, and has installed spotlights that blind the hell outta me on my deck or backyard when on. I'll either talk to him or just break out the Diana .... easy shot too ;) |
Gotta agree with Zeke - yours is a deliberate act of escalation, intended to provoke. This will not end well for you.

He has a bunch of lights that illuminate his property to your detriment but it does not sound like he is intentionally targeting you. You on the other hand are intentionally targeting / harassing / antagonizing him. I'm not saying you should or should not retaliate because that's entirely your choice. Just do it in a way that does not create exposure for you. |
Have the same type neighbor. Unfortunately he's the closest out of just a few others. I call him "Mr Angry Pants". His wife left him, older daughter doesn't visit, younger daughter, now in college, visits begrudgingly. He drinks beer/ smokes cigarettes all the time. A while back, his dog, ran over on our property while I was walking my dog. Has no collar, he refuses to have her on a leash. I've politely asked him to keep his dog on his property.
So he runs over to get his dog, shines a flashlight in my wife's face, called her a B#$@^. I went over, did not engage, told him to leave. Called the local animal control on him next morning. I also adjusted my security cameras on that end of my house to focus on my property line. Here's the key, I don't engage him, period. He's dead to me. I'm not going to escalate this into the Hatfields & McCoys. The people that owned our house prior to us, had a restraining order, multiple court cases with him - nonsense |
The problem we have is because there are no street lights, all other lights appear bright.
Have you gone over there at night to talk to him? |

It has been written here in the past: Just because you can doesn't mean you should. After almost 30 years here at Rancho Seahawk, I don't look forward to having neighbors. The house I bought in SC has been a rental for two years and the neighbor is a putz. On second thought, what kind of light, again? :D |
yes, have spoken to him, texted him and emailed him about this over the last year and a half so he is well aware of the impact. Last night the place went dark very early in the evening, so the beacon comes down today. This was never to be a forever thing, as I said I've had the flasher for 6 months and not implemented it. it will go up on a as needed basis.
I do not expect dude to kill his lights at 8PM or anything silly but leaving it on all night is where it rubs me wrong. I am in a very rural area so it is pitch black at night. I will not even get into his backpack blower use.... this affects the neighbor on the other side more than me when he blows the pollen and dust toward their house right about the time windows are starting to be opened for evening cooling. neighbors wife's nice car gets trashed due to this every other day or so all summer. |
We got a new neighbor last year. His house is 3/4 of a mile away. He put up some very bright lights.
He is having it out with another neighbor who lives closer over the lights. I’m not getting involved. For me, if I have a bad neighbor, I will line up all my crappy old farm equipment along the property line and if I need to escalate, I will get pigs… Right now, there is no need and I hope there never will be. |
I had a neighbor similar to this, on a far smaller scale. It also included sound. For the light I used highly reflective window film, it really cut down on the impact. At the same time I planted poplars inside the property line, those things grow like crazy. The trees were far closer to his/her house than mine. In a year the problem was all on them as the trees provided cover. After about three years they asked me to remove the trees. Nope, not without a written agreement (and the nice impact the trees had on my house on sunny afternoons).
I had motion sensors on my lights and he/she refused to reciprocate. The passive response worked out well for me, including the numerous unplanned consequences, like the shade and greenery. Found out that the HOA was fining the crap out of them for all the other violations. I moved two years ago to a much nicer and more secluded area. |
You know his mailing address, so I'll just leave a little entertaining reading for ya...

If you do plan to continue with the beacon, make sure you add some wires between it and your well pump or septic system so that it is obvious that it is merely a flashing light that indicates a fault with your waterworks…
|
Tocayo, I get the frustration (i had various issues with a neighbor - thankfully he sold and moved away) BUT you should defuse the situation. Should it become time to talk to authorities you don't want to be at (shared) fault.
ah, don't plow his drive...... |

The closest "town" to us is Weimar, population ~2k, 4 miles away. Then we live in Borden (not the county, and yes, named after the milk guy) which is an "unincorporated community" that had 60 residents in 2000. The next town down the road, Glidden (not named after the paint peeps as far as I know), 7.5 miles population ~550. Next down from Glidden is Columbus, ~12 miles, population ~3600 The opposite direction from Columbus, past Weimar about 12 miles down the road is Schulenburg, population ~2700. So ~25 mile east-west stretch accounts for about 9k folks. The county that we live in is 974sq miles, and has a population of 20k folks. I'm digging a population density of 20 people per square mile. |
I am experiencing an uptic of uptalk at work, which, is a bit like the aural version of the neighbors visual light intrusion.
This inspired me to write a ten step path to success. Well- my path - sucked. Instead, I will share points 4 and 6 of my 10 step plan: 4. There needs to be a plan of being in charge- specifically, how 'my' steps of escalation will provide an offramp to solution, not to a third party (i.e. popo/ lawyers) having to step in and enforce a solution. 6. Make sure blinky is not stolen from work site or is state property. |

UPDATE-- lights have been off at around 10PM every night since his last "infraction" and the blinker. Another neighbor a couple houses away did say he saw it Sundee night, but being 300 yards away it was no bother. |
Excellent! The acres of woods behind my house are pitch black too .... or were :(. A spotlight is like a supernova. My new neighbor has no clue how annoying it is to several neighbors either... and she throws out scraps that attract the 4 legged predators too.... city folks ...
