The coronation, and the entire royal family is less important to me that the fate of a bug in the Amazon forest about to be eaten by a frog. The British have a 2,000 year history of pomp and circumstance. The history of Rome invading, the Vikings, and the French wars is interesting as a history nerd. Now the royal family is just a total waste of time and money and holds no interest at all for me.

Are you a Brit? I admit to being a bit of an anglophile and while I too think the monarchy is a waste of money I admire the Brits respect for tradition.

I've stood inside that Cathedral and couldn't bring myself to utter a sound. It was that awe inspiring. We don't honor our physical history the way England does. We bulldoze and rebuild. Maybe one day if we survive as a nation for two thousand years we'll be able to celebrate in a similar way.

Not a joke: When I read the words "King Chuck" I thought this thread was going to be about some ridiculously giant NBA party that Barkely was involved with.

Only after reading further down the page did I remember that The Round Mound of Rebound is only "Sir Charles", not a king, and realized this was about the most successful welfare recipients the world has ever known.

Glen, a Brit?

Lord no…

Other than a casual interest in MGs and Triumphs I’m no Anglophile but do the tax payers actually support the Crown? I thought they got by on their real estate holdings. I seem to recall the royal family being the largest single landlord in the country.

There are a lot of Brits that are not in favor (favour :D ) of the Monarchy but it seems that they are a minority.

The royals do earn by virtue of their ENORMOUS real estate holdings but they also receive a stipend from the government but that's more complicated than I can explain.

Halm 05-06-2023 05:20 AM

Article in today's WSJ says a recent survey was 54% of Brits in favor of the monarchy.

Just heard the Royal family costs me $2 a year

Not bad value considering they bring $2.1B revenue into the UK a year

I'm not a royalist but proud that the Royal family is still a big part of the UK's living, here and now history

The coronation today of King Charles III is just a continuing of history. UK is a more interesting country because of it not despite it

Don't like it, that's ok, as you can always follow the Kardashians :D

The Synergizer 05-06-2023 06:39 AM

You just figured that out?

The owner of a 2 billion dollar fortune throws himself a 1.25 million dollar party and 'asks' the guests - or more accurately, the servants - to pay.

Yay, The Royalty.

That is a good deal. I've contributed a bit with tours of Windsor, the Tower etc. So, do the royals live on their own money or a gov't grant? It seems that they earn alot from real estate and peripheral farming.

BTW is all the gold that I saw in the cathedral for real?

Yay, The Royalty.

I've seen the cost was like $125-140 million.... and even British dawgs didn't watch it ....

Yay, The Dogs :D

The Good King Charles!

I'm not a Royalist but just like organised religion I can see the value of such an institution.

Our world is a mess right now. Maybe some good old fashioned tradition is called for.

That's good! Didn't think of that one, I was thinking she belonged on a "cake mix" box.... or a bottle of maple syrup. Something you'd see in Sunset Magazine in the 70's...

I heard Stevie sing this today and I laughed at the coincidence.

Rock on, ancient queen
Follow those who pale in your shadow
Rulers make bad lovers
You better put your kingdom up for sale
Up for sale

My thoughts too.

I'm a Royalist and loved every minute of it.

I'm pleased the camera didn't hover over that little prick Harry. Completely ignored him.

The Kardashians are one of the few real world things I rank lower, way way lower than the royal family.

I really do appreciate the 2,000+ history of the island's royalty. I loved the series Time Team. Real history presented as it was uncovered.

As a resident in a territory that is only opened to the white man in 1889 "old" has a very different scale. The oldest building in all of Oklahoma is Sequoyah's Cabin built in 1829.

Oklahoma City did not exist at all before April 22, 1889. So we know the exact date our city was founded. London was founded sometime between 1750 BC and 1285 BC, so they have a 465 year range to estimate the founding. Astonishing, 3,500 years ago.

If Prince William were to pass before becoming King, does "next in line" become Harry, William's kid, or Princess Kardashian?

I really don't keep up with this "stuff" ;)

I think William's kid. But could be wrong (I'm hardly ever wrong).

I think Harry is out completely. But I could be wrong... Good thing GF is not here or she would give you the three hour abbreviated answer to your question.

Or if they runout of suitable people Princess Kardashian?
