I think i did something stupid
Threw my hat in the ring for our HOA elections
After 20 years my community is finally built out so full control of the board transfers from the developer to residents. I really don’t want to do this but my choices are sell and get the f outa dodge, stay and put up with the karen’s who are itching to take control and watch them burn it down, or suck it up and take an active role in preserving what we have which as far as an HOA run community goes has really been OK the last 15 years i’ve been here. |
Best of luck to ya...
When I'm looking for homes, I do my very best to stay away from HOAs. |
If'n you think you did .... you probably did :D
But good luck! |
You did OK... Avoid HOA at all costs, but if stuck with it, at least be on the board to control the madness !
|
No good deed goes unpunished, godspeed to ya

My sister and brother-in-law live in an HOA neighborhood.
Lotsa drama over the fancy entrance, and the lights not working. All the bids to repair were sky high. Brother-in-law got himself elected to the board, became president. Hired a backhoe operator, paid by the hour. Hired an electrician, paid by the hour. Job was completed faster, and far less expensive than anything the former board proposed. No more drama. He didn't want to be board president, but saw a need, and solved it. Now, go and do likewise! |

Wanna trade?😎
You’ll do great. |
If you like the neighborhood, get involved to preserve what you value. Either that, suck it up or get out.
I'm so glad my nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away. Best Les |
We are living in a townhouse for now, with an HOA, and we wanted to paint the exterior white. We submitted the paperwork to the HOA and they denied it because they said they had to paint the exterior. No ****, Sherlock. You would have the paint code, just like you do every other townhouse in the community. When it’s time to paint, you can look at the records and paint it. 🙄
Later on, we found out all of the board members were able to paint their house. 🤬 |
Good luck. You are going to have to deal with human beings at their worst.
I recall a few years ago a woman in our neighborhood passed around a flyer asking people, if it was convenient for them, not to mow their lawns during some period of time ( I think it was before 8:00 AM or during the dinner hour, it was nothing unreasonable). It was merely a request, but the blowback she got was incredible. People called her names, called her a communist, all kinds of ridiculous stuff. People suck. While living at the same place we were having a party in my back yard. My neighbor to the rear decided that was a great time to mow his lawn. He was literally blowing grass clippings onto our food. I told him I would gladly mow his lawn for him tomorrow if he would let us enjoy our party. He said nope - gotta do it right now. People really suck. |

It's not about stooopidity either .... it's cliques, "power tripping", and control issues, etc. that permeate such boards imo. |

I read horror stories about our HOA on Nextdoor, but they have never contacted me for anything in 13 yrs here. I know we have multiple violations, but they leave us alone. Most recently we installed a security door and did not submit a plan to the HOA for it, as is required. I really think they don't know we exist, as long as we pay dues on time and don't do anything egregious. I only blew off the security door application, not because it was a difficult thing, but rather I just don't want to be on their radar. It's been on for three weeks and no one has said a word.

"those who refuse to get involved in politics end up ruled by their inferiors"
usually attributed to Plato if you're trapped in an HOA situation the only option is to take control and rule the way you want. |

Well, this took a while to resolve.
Election kept getting delayed because the original developer could not own any land in the community. We kept finding little parcels here and there that needed to be dealt with, ownership turned over to the community. There were two parcels in particular on the outer edges that were a big deal, they had natural gas wells on them. In TX / resource rich areas there are two types of ownership, what you can see meaning above ground and what you can't see, whats below ground. So you can own property but not own the mineral rights for what is under it. You can own both but it's very expensive. So the question was, if the developer hands that property over do the mineral rights transfer, does the community get the money, and if not who is liable if one of them, which is next to the track for the Middle School, blows up and levels a building full of kids? We got it all sorted and election results were tonight. I got elected. Not entirely sure congratulations are in order but we did keep the crazy Karen's off the board so whatever shyte will be coming my way is worth it. And yes, I'm already drinking and not in a celebratory way. |
In at least one way (no Karens) congrats.
Good luck is probably most fitting for the situation that you just got yourself into. |
My HOA are in the process of throwing me out.
A supposed conflict of interest. They all sided with someone I was in battle with. I'm in the right but she is more personable than I am. I told them they are all behaving like a bunch of high school girls with their little cliques and "we are the in-crowd" and should stick to the facts and the rules. F' them all. |

We are in what is known as an unincorporated part of the county. You are in TX, you know what that means, we are self governing. For those who don't think of a small city or town that is not run by any local Government rather entirely resident run. We residents manage all our infrastructure, roads, water, the whole thing. |

Heavy drinking is a good strategy, especially in the hours before board meetings. Remember the phrase, “I’m an elected board member and I don’t give a f*** who you are!!” |
Good luck!

When I was on the board of our Mexican HOA community, we found some embezzlement.
Nothing like having a threat from a Cartel dude told to you out on the 17th hole of the Golf Course. Which shows how they know everything about everybody at all times. My Mexican Pistol is all I got, she is a Cane Corso who has got my back at all times too while in country. |
